Hey there :)

What advice do you have for striking a work/life balance?

Utilising your time efficiently and remembering to take a digital break once in a while. It's easy to be consumed by social media—remember to limit your screen time!

What anxieties, if any, do you hold about your life and career? And how do you deal with them?

A big source of anxiety that tends to come with working as a freelance photographer and creative director is learning to manage client expectations as well as learning to say no. It's very easy to feel overwhelmed when handling jobs requests or briefs which are coming in. I try my best to be selective with my clients, as I believe in building long term relationships. Knowing your worth is important. Do not promise the world and underdeliver.

How has the current COVID-19 situation affected your industry, and your work personally?

Economic uncertainty runs high these days as the COVID-19 pandemic wreaks havoc on everyone's lives and businesses. With COVID-19 emerging, travel continues to be hit hard, with luxury embarking on mobile and digital-first experiences. My client shoots which involved having to travel all got cancelled. However, interestingly enough, I have gotten more requests on content creation for digital platforms and less campaign work during this pandemic.

How do you deal with procrastination?

Minimising anything which will distract my attention. Don't multitask.

What does an average day look like for you?

I wake up at 7am, make a black coffee and do a quick 28-minute SWEAT workout. I'll then add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to warm water and make myself a bowl of warm oats with honey. During this time, I'll go through my Instagram feed and check my direct messages and keep up to date with the latest news. Post breakfast I'll check my client e-mails and update my website, if necessary. I'll have a late lunch around 2pm, which usually consists of a sous vide chicken breast and whatever veggies I can find. I try to schedule client meetings in the afternoon and do all my client edits/retouching of images after lunch depending on the urgency of the content. When my day has been wrapped up, I'll head home, walk my dog and make dinner!

What do you consider your biggest failure? And how did you persevere and grow from the experience?

My biggest learning was being sent on a campaign shoot for a client where I had no formal experience of shooting in studio. I decided to enroll at the New York Film Academy and ensured that I was well prepared for any future client campaigns I needed to work on.

When working on a new project, how do you overcome self-doubt and fear?

Never underestimate your capabilities. Your mind is your biggest competitor.

Do you have any rituals that help with your work or mental health?

I have a daily yoga routine to keep my mental balance [in check]. I also regularly take a digital detox when I am feeling overwhelmed by social media.

What’s the best and worst advice you’ve ever been given?

Worst: “Just go with the flow”.

Best: “You never have to work a day in your life, if you do what you love”.

Are there any misconceptions about what you do that you’d like to dispel or clarify?

People see me working in the luxury industry and automatically assume that is the type of lifestyle I lead; however, having grown up in South Africa, I was raised in a grounded and family-orientated environment.

How do you navigate social media, any rules or guidelines you set for yourself?

Avoid the cliche, authenticity and originality is key. Don’t over-edit your photos. Avoid the cheesy quote.

Who do you nominate for the next interview? Why?

I’d like to nominate girl boss Jaimee Lupton, founder of Monday Haircare. She’s an old friend of mine and has gone on to do some amazing things! I am so proud of her.

Much love,

Lilith and Arabella
