002: The Sursy Series

June 1, 2020

Times are weird, and even though every brand ever is in our inboxes and on our feeds saying the same things about 'these unprecedented times,' it would be obtuse of me to start an e-newsletter without mention of COVID-19 and of the racial injustice that continues to take place across our country.

I'm an interior designer and entrepreneur, not a politician nor a seasoned activist, but I want to make my stance clear that I stand beside and behind people of all colors (...and genders and sexualities and ethnicities and backgrounds...). While I continue to share business updates and pretty before/after photos and motel development updates and the like, please know that in the background I am taking action, and that I encourage you to do the same. I am reading more books by black authors and acknowledging the work of POC in my industry in particular. I am putting thought daily into being not being simply "not racist," but being anti-racist. I am educating myself, I am speaking out, I am donating what I can, and I am committed to advocating for equality for all in every way I can.

As I type, there are protests happening less than a mile from my home. There are helicopters overhead, and at 8pm I hear the now familiar nightly howl in support of our essential workers at shift change. It's an odd juxtaposition of humanity. Amidst the uncertainty and the sadness and the loneliness of these times, I'm trying to remain hopeful and I hope you are too. I also hope this email update finds you well, and is received as intended: not as a tone deaf message but as a thoughtful note that acknowledges the state of the world while still carving out space to share business-related updates and small wins I'm working hard to make happen amidst it all.

Sending lots of strength, support, and love to you and yours.

Cheers,

Lauren

Wondering what

the heck I've been up to?

Designing in a pandemic? Not for the faint of heart. As beautiful as the final product looks (seriously, I wish this was my home!), the process wasn't as smooth sailing as normal. Managing contractors and subs on a project this size would be a challenge with or without social distancing orders in place. With it? That much more patience, organization, and vision was needed to make key design decisions from remote and keep the project on track and morale up.

The homeowners are incredible - a young family so deserving of a space like this to retreat to in the mountains! - and in the end the construction woes were worth it...we got our first Airbnb guests within just a week of putting the shoppable listing live, and the place is the perfect gathering spot for their family and friends!

INTERIOR DESIGN

We're wrapping up the Studio Cabin install this week—it's an off-grid tiny house at the Coal Creek Cabin!

Check out this master bedroom design for a rad couple in the Highlands neighborhood!

Busy, right? Grateful to be, now more than ever. If you're interested in tuning in, I'm speaking on a virtual panel this Wednesday June 3rd alongside some super talented folks in the design/build industry: Colorado Chapter Young Leaders Webinar: Building Your Personal Brand (click to register)

I'm also working with ShelterBelt Design to put together our building plans for the motel which I'll share in our next send, but in the meantime I'll leave you with this fun sneak peek and a snap of an authentic 1950's postcard of the property. Cannot wait to get to work restoring this piece of roadside Americana back to it's original glory and share the progress - bring on all the art deco vibes!

P.S. Our new website is launching soon with a bunch of new #madeincolorado goods comin' in hot!
