"You are personally responsible for becoming more ethical than the society you grew up in."

"And I must say tonight that a riot is the language of the unheard. And what is it America has failed to hear?... It has failed to hear that the promises of freedom and justice have not been met. And it has failed to hear that large segments of white society are more concerned about tranquility and the status quo than justice and humanity."

—Martin Luther King, Jr.

I may lose a few followers, a few fans, a few customers for being vocal. But for that, I am okay. The driving purpose of Grain has always been ethics - ethics of farming, ethics of raising livestock, ethics of business, ethics of governance of foods, ethics of ingredient sourcing, ethics of transparency - and ethics of moral and whats right. My ultimate goal was always to have a storefront in Snohomish, and to get to the point to be able to donate 10% of every single sale to a philanthropic vision. We aren't at that profit line yet, but why wait? Why not start now? We have been sharing resources and video footage and ways you can help in our stories on both Instagram and Facebook. I have shared a lot (and will continue to) on my personal Facebook profile, Lauren Sophia Anderson. We have to, as a society, do better. Especially with what happened Sunday evening and Monday evening in downtown Snohomish, with a Snohomish storefront on the near horizon - we want to continue to be a voice and activist in the community. I hope that if you disagree with these sentiments, that we can have a two-way conversation (feel free to email me at lauren@grainartisanbakery.com - even if you want to talk about how we feel the same way! I love conversations) or that you can be polite and respectful in your departure from the Grain Community.

we have now begun a two-way conversation.

The most important thing I want to convey is this: we’ve begun a two-way conversation. Hyper locally in the Grain Community, locally as a city, locally as a state, nationally as a nation, and internationally between countries. We are doing our part and starting those "end goal" dreams of being a philanthropic bakery by donating 10% of this weeks proceeds to organizations, funds, non-profits supporting black communities - we are still deciding which one(s) exactly (feel free to sound off on our social media post requesting input while we do our own research), but will announce our decision and donation amount after this weekend's orders wrap up - you can help by clicking the order button below and pre-ordering for Snohomish Farmers Market or the bake-at-home weekend pre-orders.

I can’t wait to hear back from you. Thank you for being alongside our community.

Let us stand by our brothers and sisters,

Here's to amplifying melanated voices,

Lauren
