TikTok Banned in India
59 Apps were banned in India this week, including TikTok. This was in response over a violent military clash between India and China.
What are the implications for TikTokers here in America, as India is one of TikTok’s largest global markets with over 200 million users? It’s too early to tell, but we are watching this closely.
Business Insider reports: “To date, India comprises nearly 30% of all downloads across the App Store and Google Play, according to Sensor Tower. Sensor Tower anticipates that if the ban in India were to remain in effect for the remainder of 2020, TikTok could lose more than 100 million new downloads.”
India has banned TikTok twice in the past before, both instances were temporary, we’ll keep you posted!
What is Dark Academia?
It’s a subculture dedicated to all things….education? Possibly as a response to all colleges and schools being completely shut down, the subculture of Dark Academia is thriving on TikTok.
There are over 18 million views of the videos tagged with Dark Academia on TikTok and the users are mostly in the 14-25 age range.
The New York Times writes: “In the halls of Dark Academia, nostalgia and a world free of modern technology reign. Many of the community members focus on what life might have been like in the 19th and early 20th century at private schools in England, boarding schools, prep schools or Ivy League colleges in New England.”
Dark Academia tends to be fluid in it's gender and sexuality thus amassing a large LGBTQ+ following. It’s not only an aesthetic, but it's also a community.
Youtube Wants to be TikTok?
Youtube is going to start testing a new feature on Youtube, allowing you to publish short form videos to the platform. Videos that are 15 seconds....the exact same length as TikTok.
To check if you have this function available to you, when logging into the Youtube app on your phone, you'll see 'create a video' pop up as an option.
We definitely think that this is a move in response to the huge growth of TikTok
