Hey there :)

What turning point in your career do you consider your ā€œbig breakā€?

Starting Fourth St. Thereā€™s nothing more fulfilling than enjoying what youā€™re doing every day, which for me meant starting something of my own. When I started Fourth St, I had moved back to New Zealand and wanted to work in interiors, but

couldnā€™t seem to get a job to make the shift. Fourth St started as a way to monetise my natural interests of collecting and creating, but also as a result of not getting my way.

What advice do you have for striking a work/life balance?

I am social by nature but also crave solitude. Too much of either and Iā€™m out of balance. Social interactions give me energy, but too much can also deplete me. Itā€™s important to say no if you need to focus. I believe if you need to go underground for a few weeks to get something done, do. True friends will understand and will always be there.

What anxieties, if any, do you hold about your life/career? And how do you deal with them?

The unknown is scary but also motivating. Have a plan of what you want to achieve in the coming months and donā€™t forget to take note of your growth and where youā€™ve come from.

How has the current COVID-19 situation affected your industry, and your work personally? How have you dealt with it?

When we went in to lockdown, I felt a rush of inspiration and knew I had to be proactive. I prepared detailed forecasts with my accountant. I really thought about what I wanted to focus on in terms of direction, products and goals. As well as this, I doubled my marketing as I knew I needed increased reach to generate more sales.

How do you deal with procrastination?

Writing lists and setting goals!

Can you recommend any resources that have helped you in your career?

I left my job at Bulgari in New York to work for a friend at a consultancy business. When the contract came through, it was only about twenty hours a week which I knew I couldnā€™t survive on. At the same time, I came across the book The Obstacle Is the Way by Ryan Holiday. I read it in a day. It completely shifted my mindset from feeling defeated to accepting the challenge before me. Making my pennies stretch was liberating and became a game. I believe these lessons helped me in my first

year of business when I had to live lean, cut superfluous spending to reach my goals and have the courage to live without a salary. A short passage I had saved ā€¦

ā€œWhen people are:

  - Rude or disrespectful. They underestimate us. A huge                     advantage.

  - Conniving: We wonā€™t have to apologise when we make an             example out of them

  - Critical or question our abilities: Lower expectations are easier     to exceed

  - Lazy: Makes whatever we accomplish seem all the more               admirable.

Itā€™s striking. These are perfectly fine starting points, better, in some cases, than whatever youā€™d have hoped for in the best scenario. What advantage do you derive from someone being polite? Or pulling their punches? Behind the behaviours that provoke an immediate negative reaction is opportunity ā€“ some exposed benefit that we can seize mentally and then act uponā€¦. This must be a complete flip. Seeing through the negative, past its underside and into its corollary: the positiveā€.

I often come back to this book when Iā€™m in a bind and open it on a random page for some wisdom. Another key takeaway: ā€œthe obstacle shows you the way by showing you what isnā€™t the wayā€.

How do you navigate social media, any rules or guidelines you set for yourself?

I love my phone as a source of information, inspiration and connectedness but if I notice myself checking it too much Iā€™ll put it on airplane mode and in another room.

List five things keeping you inspired and sane right now.

5. My family and friends.
