Hey there :)

What turning point in your career do you consider your “big break”?

Life for me is less about big breaks and more about incremental steps and habits. I think often we look back at our life to identify the big break without realising that another version of that could be in our present day or just around the corner. I still feel very much 'in progress’, and in a learning phase. While not necessarily a comfortable space to sit in, it’s very interesting. At the moment my focus, aside from usual work, is reaching out to people doing interesting things in areas I’d like to be more involved in. I’m having conversations that aren’t focussed on a specific end goal, it’s very refreshing.

What advice do you have for striking a work/life balance?

Repeatedly practice new habits that serve who you want to become.

What anxieties, if any, do you hold about your life/career? And how do you deal with them?

My biggest fear is to be stuck with the same outdated knowledge for a lifetime. I’m always encouraging myself to stay in a learning mindset.

Another would be leaning into motherhood while building a more resilient work life. It’s a work in progress and at times can overwhelm. Turns out I had very preconceived ideas about when and how I would return after maternity leave. The reality has been much messier, but I’m trying to embrace it all.

I also feel a strong need to contribute in a bigger way; beyond me and beyond my family. I wouldn’t say I feel anxious about it, but have pinned some ambitions onto myself that I now need to realise.

How has the current COVID-19 situation affected your industry, and your work personally? How have you dealt with it?

The conversation has certainly changed. Business owners and managers are required to adapt and stay agile while thinking forward into a great unknown. Overall, while the last few months have been challenging for almost everyone, there are still opportunities and paths to take if you can remain open-minded.

What does productivity look like to you and what tips do you have for managing your time?

Lists. I’ll even make them for ridiculous, low priority tasks.

How do you deal with procrastination?

I try to begin with uncomfortable or more difficult tasks as soon as possible. I’ve become more aware when I’m avoiding something, and usually start by asking myself why I’m avoiding it, before breaking the task down into tiny parts.

What do you consider your biggest failure? And how did you persevere and grow from the experience?

Not seeking out business mentors and outside support when I started working for myself. Having a village of people who will support you and offer advice is essential. I was constantly second guessing both my ability and overall direction. As a result it initially took much longer to build momentum.

When working on a new project how do you overcome self-doubt and fear?

By fully immersing myself in the client's industry or area of expertise. I'll do lots of initial reading or listen to podcasts and basically absorb a large variety of information, which helps calm any nerves.

What’s the best and worst advice you’ve ever been given?

I try not to hold on to bad advice. Almost always its usually delivered with good intentions.

How do you navigate social media, any rules or guidelines you set for yourself?

It’s far too easy to go down the social media rabbit hole. I’m terrible and largely ignore those social media time limit notifications that pop up on iPhone. Logging out entirely or leaving my phone at home can help but not always...

List five things keeping you inspired and sane right now.

1. As a child I was always a reader but fell out of the practice in         my adult life for many years. Now I have a few books on the go     at any one time and pick which one to read based on my                 mood. These are my current favourites:

5. My daughter Claudia. She's so curious and tuned in to                     everything, I love watching her totter about our garden.

Who do you nominate for the next interview?

My friend Akiko Kurematsu, culture writer, journalist and curator. And a very good cook.

Much love,
