This month, we continue our work with educating children from the Laguna neighborhood of Veracruz, Mexico. The impact of COVID-19 is still severe in Veracruz and as a result the families of our students have big economic challenges. Food security is fragile.
Amazingly, our students and families are doing well. Our students and families have been putting in tighter security to keep the center and students safe in this difficult time. Reinforced doors and a new rebar and cement block wall for our perimeter have been installed.
Goldi, our director, continues in poor health with limited access to medical care (meds yes; doctor visits or hospital visits no).
Amiguitos has cut our operating budget to 33% of prior levels and focus our limited funds on keeping kids in school. Unfortunately, our daily feeding program that has been going for the past 12 years non-stop is no longer running . This has left many of our kids, pretty hungry these days as they are not eating every day.
We would like to resume feeding a lunch to each kid every day when we have sufficient support. We appreciate any support you can provide to help us make this happen.
The fact is that we are very grateful for your ongoing and generous support. All of our kids are in school, thanks to you! Our summer school classes at the center have been running with very small groups, distancing and masks. Kids are not getting as much class time as last year, but the learning continues.
Times are hard and families in the neighborhood are coming to us for help. In January we had about 100 students, but n. Now we have grown to around 140 students, so we are in need of your support more than ever during these times.
Thank you for supporting our amazing students and their families.
