Develop the Habit of Exceeding Expectation

“There are ten weaknesses against which most of us must guard ourselves. One of these is the habit of trying to reap before we have sown, and the other nine are all wrapped up in the one practice of creating alibis to cover every mistake made.” – The Law of Success by Napoleon Hill

I’ve had conversations with other business owners and working professionals and often hear them say, “I’m not paid to do all of that.” I too fell into this growth stunting mentality for a short while. I remember taking my first professional job after honorably discharging from the military. I was excited; I did not know a lot about electronics, but I was eager to learn. I arrived at work early and was often the last person to leave.  I was making in the mid five-figures which is not a lot of money for Northern Virginia, but my mentality was – I’m getting paid! I did way more than I was paid to do. I worked hard. I thrust myself into my job while completing my undergraduate degree. I remember arriving to work at 6 am, leaving for class at 9 am, getting back to work at 11 am, going back to school at 7 pm (Tuesday and Thursday nights), and sometimes going back to work at 10 pm – if I did not stay on campus to prepare myself for the next day’s classes. I would end up going to sleep sometime after midnight. I was motivated and wanted to give my all. This lasted for nearly one year.

One evening at work my supervisor pulled me aside. He said, “I’m taking a job somewhere else man and I am nominating you to replace me.” I was shocked! “You bust your behind here and you’re a Junior guy… this decision will piss some people off, but you earned it by doing more than you’ve paid for. You’re reliable and you know how to get things done.” I remember this conversation like it was yesterday – “… you earned it by doing more than you’re paid to do.”

What a concept!? People are always watching you. Make a conscious effort to exceed expectations. Focus on your customer’s needs and put forth the additional effort to surpass them. Imagine their enthusiasm once he/she receives the deliverable. If you sow, eventually your harvest will come in for a major reaping! By establishing the reputation of being a person who always does more for which you are paid, you and your business will benefit by comparison with those around you who do not render such service. The difference will be so noticeable that there will be a keen competition for your services, no matter what your lifework may be.

SSC Tip: Use wisdom and know the difference between exceeding expectations and exceeding your physical capacities. The burnout is real!
