Epic Family,

Every person who has ever been born longs to feel safe and secure. And because we have that desire, we’re willing to look in many different places to gain a sense of security. We can all admit that 2020 has been challenging in many ways. However, some people have struggled with it way more than others.

A loss of security has exacerbated the pain of this year for many people. We found our security in jobs that we now know aren’t that secure. We felt secure in our freedoms, but now many of those have been restricted. We felt safe because of how our economy had been doing, but have you seen the latest economic forecasts?

Every one of us looks to something as our source of security.

Proverbs 18:10-11 The name of the LORD is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe. The wealth of the rich is their fortified city; they imagine it a wall too high to scale.

Where is your safe place? Is it your wealth or your intelligence or in your physical health or in your achievements?

Be honest about where you’re tempted to find security. These verses talk about how wealthy people can believe that their riches will keep them safe. What are you tempted to rely on for your security? Be honest with yourself and with God on this. Confess the things you’ve looked to, rather than looking to God.

Find your ultimate security in the name of the LORD. God is steadfast. He doesn’t change. He is able to hold you up, even when everything is crumbling around you. If we’re going to trust God to keep us secure for all of eternity, then surely we can trust Him to keep us secure during our time on this earth.

Pay attention to your anxieties. Our anxieties can reveal what we’re depending on for our well-being. If money makes me anxious, it’s probably because I think I need money more than God. If I’m worried about Epic’s future, it’s probably because I’m trusting something more than God. If I’m overly concerned about having enough of something in the future, it might mean I’m asking something else to provide what only God can actually provide for me.

Jesus was constantly stepping into a world that seemed to lack security and He reminded his disciples of what He wants to say to you today - “You’re still in my hand. My peace be with you. You can trust me.”

Let me encourage you to meditate on Psalm 23 this week and the security it offers us.

Much Love,

Pastor Ben
