BEAUTIFUL HUMANS! 2020 is a wild one, isn't it? During times of crazy turmoil, and mercury retrograde, of course, I always try to find the light.
For me, the light throughout this weird year has been building this community and collaborating with so many women of color from all over. I mean, women of color are fucking phenomenal.
One phenomenal human I've met during this time, who I'd like to introduce you to is actually our guest from the new season of the in bold company podcast. Ready to meet her?
āØGUEST EDIT WITH LT IN THE CITYāØ
Hello, hello! Itās so great to e-meet all of you. My name is LāOreal Thompson Payton and Iām a Baltimore-bred, Chicago-based freelance writer and motivational speaker dedicated to uplifting Black women and girls.
Recently, Iāve been giving a lot of thought to rest and what it means to do so as a Black woman in 2020. Last year, I interviewed Tricia Hersey, founder of The Nap Ministry, for a story in the Shine App. And her quote about us needing soul-care being the goal more than self-care has stuck with me ever since.
You donāt need me to tell you times are tough. We all get it. And thereās constant pressure to keep at it, keep going, keep fighting, keep resisting. Well, I want to let you in on a little secret Tricia told me: rest is a form of resistance.
Listen, you canāt pour from an empty cup. So be sure to fill yours first. Itās not selfish, itās an act of courage, an act of love. Or as Black feminist writer Audre Lorde would say, āCaring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.ā
