BEAUTIFUL HUMANS! 2020 is a wild one, isn't it? During times of crazy turmoil, and mercury retrograde, of course, I always try to find the light.

For me, the light throughout this weird year has been building this community and collaborating with so many women of color from all over. I mean, women of color are fucking phenomenal.

One phenomenal human I've met during this time, who I'd like to introduce you to is actually our guest from the new season of the in bold company podcast. Ready to meet her?

✨GUEST EDIT WITH LT IN THE CITY✨

Hello, hello! It’s so great to e-meet all of you. My name is L’Oreal Thompson Payton and I’m a Baltimore-bred, Chicago-based freelance writer and motivational speaker dedicated to uplifting Black women and girls.

Recently, I’ve been giving a lot of thought to rest and what it means to do so as a Black woman in 2020. Last year, I interviewed Tricia Hersey, founder of The Nap Ministry, for a story in the Shine App. And her quote about us needing soul-care being the goal more than self-care has stuck with me ever since.

You don’t need me to tell you times are tough. We all get it. And there’s constant pressure to keep at it, keep going, keep fighting, keep resisting. Well, I want to let you in on a little secret Tricia told me: rest is a form of resistance.

Listen, you can’t pour from an empty cup. So be sure to fill yours first. It’s not selfish, it’s an act of courage, an act of love. Or as Black feminist writer Audre Lorde would say, ā€œCaring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.ā€

Subscribe to L’Oreal’s weekly motivational newsletter and follow her on Instagram and Twitter @LTintheCity.
