This month's theme:

GETTING INVOLVED

But First… the topic on everyone's minds

Election Day has passed and results are in across the nation. Some of you may remember that we voted as a group to endorse two candidates in critical local races: George Gascon for LA District Attorney, and Sen. Holly Mitchell for LA County Supervisor

We are thrilled to update that both candidates were successful in their races!

We are looking forward to seeing how they integrate evidence-based research into their policymaking!

Have the elections renewed your drive for science policy?

With the University continuing remote status through the end of Winter 2021, we're looking for creative ways for our members to find community and become more involved in the Science Policy Group at UCLA.

Here's how to get more involved in SPG:

Science Policy Training and Education provided by NSPN

“For those who are interested in learning about the ins and outs of science policy, this resource is an introduction into the detailed mechanics of how policy and science meet at every level of government. Modules will guide you through each branch of government and where science policy is integrated into the system, as well as giving you real-life examples of student groups and individuals around the United States who are taking science policy and advocacy into their own hands."

ACTIVISM

A Petition Against Neighborhood Drilling in LA

LA's Department of Regional Planning is in the process of updating its Title 22 Oil Well Ordinance for the first time in almost 40 years. This rule oversees oil drilling in most of unincorporated LA County, including active wells within 2500 feet from where UCLA students live. Numerous studies link close proximity to oil wells with asthma, heart disease, cancer, and more.

You can sign THIS PETITION to send an email to LA county Department of Regional Planning, and to opt in for updates from STAND LA, an organization against neighborhood drilling.

Topic #3: Health Care Access

Working to become anti-racist requires that we research and acknowledge the persistence and gravity of structural racism, including within the sciences. This  month's topic addresses how systemic racism disproportionately affects the mortality rates of Black Americans through factors like health insurance, COVID-19 testing, and segregation.
