Caring For Your Candles 101:

Here's everything you need to know about caring for your hand poured candle(s) from Altruistic Love Candle Company. The information below will be brand new for some and will serve as a reminder for others. In order to ensure optimal performance of your new candle(s), there are a few tips you should acknowledge and implement.

  • Keep your wicks trimmed. I trim the wicks to ¼ inch (or shorter sometimes) before shipping them out to get you started on the right path, so you should be trimming them after every burn or every 4 hours. If you are burning a wooden wick candle, it must be trimmed every 2 hours or the flame may become enlarged and rampant. A trimmed wick prevents your candle from sooting, having a uncontrolled flame, and extends the lifespan of your candle. You can use a wick trimmer, scissors, nail clipper, or even your fingers.
  • Burn your candle for at least 2 hours every time you light it. This is SUPER important for your initial burn! Wax has memory, so if you do not allow it to reach a decent melt pool it will begin to tunnel. Due to the nature of our wax, it is normal to not get a full edge to edge burn on the first try. As the candle gets lower in the jar, the wax caught up in the corners will eventually melt and even out.
  • Fragrance is subjective. Some fragrances are stronger than others, so they will not all perform the same. Some will require longer burn times to fill a room — the deeper the melt pool the stronger the scent throw. Our 12oz candles are perfect for small-medium sized rooms. We're working on developing larger candles with more wicks to fill larger, open-concept rooms. Please note if you continually burn the same candle, you could potentially become nose blind to it (happens to me all the time). Try alternating between your favorite fragrances.
  • Caution against extended burn times. The rule of thumb is to NOT burn your candle for more than 4 hours. Many of you have already admitted that you do not heed to this rule (I used to live this way too). As an additional safety measure, we decided to change our wicks to burn slower to aid in preventing our glass vessels from overheating and being able to withstand longer abusive burns. This does directly impact how quickly your candle will fill a room, but your safety matters more. Furthermore, we still advise you to NOT burn your candles for more than 4 hours.
