What are our gremlins?

 

Gremlins are the parts of ourselves that hold us back from growing and thriving. They show up as doubt, negative self-talk, fear, anxiety, shame, guilt, and self-sabotage. They tend to make us doubt ourselves and our worth, think we aren't enough, and seek external validation. Sometimes our gremlins' voices are our own and other times they sound more like a parent, someone from our past, or societal conditioning. Our gremlins don't like change so they try very hard to keep us stagnant. They usually come from an unloved or unhealed part of ourselves. They are little monsters, and we all have them.

We also have another part of ourselves. A more loving, affirmative, supportive and expansive part of ourselves that comes from deep within. Some people call this intuition, authentic self, truth, inner advocate, or the highest self. Our highest self always comes from a place of love and never from a place of fear. It's our own voice or the voice of something we connect to that is greater than ourselves. This voice is clear, concise, and aligned with our truth, values, and inner wisdom. Our highest self wants us to thrive, grow, and be the best version of ourselves. It always guides us in the right direction.

Through all the work I've done with clients, it's become blindingly clear that most of us are more familiar and spend more time with our gremlins than with our highest self. Often our gremlins are much louder and more overpowering, and for many, they've become a comfort zone. It's not bad or wrong to have gremlins, it's human. Some gremlins are stronger than others, and that's okay too. My intention for myself, my clients, and for you, is to start learning which voice is which so that you can choose which one to listen to.  

 

Soul Work

 

At the end of every coaching session there is always soul work. True transformation occurs through discovery + inspired action.

 

Awareness = choice, and this soul work is about strengthening your awareness. How well do you know your gremlins? How well do you know your highest self? Be in the experiment of noticing (without judgment) when your gremlin shows up and when your highest self is present. Try asking yourself, what do I love about myself? Then notice what thoughts come up for you. Note down in your journal some of the thoughts that come from your gremlins and some of the thoughts that come from your highest self.
