We’ve been moving forward full tilt since Amber Oaks Ranch was established in 2016. There’s always much to be done on the farm, not to mention our day jobs. Molly is good about reminding me that all work and no play makes John a grumpy old man. Well, our son Jacob returned from the Middle East after 9 months of being away so we thought that was reason enough to take some time off. Jacob and his wife Lauren and our grandson Luke live in Fort Bragg, NC.
I really enjoy going to historical places - especially working farms. I really like to look at the old techniques and machinery that our forefathers used to build this country. I especially like the old crafts - woodworking, smithing, cooking etc. I can sit and watch for hours. It’s fascinating to see how they hewed a life from the earth. Well it turns out Asheville NC is just a few hours away from Ft Bragg and Asheville is home to the Biltmore Estates. And for Molly, there was lots of shopping and artsy stuff too (and of course our grandson Luke). In addition to the Downtown Asheville and the Biltmore, we took a ride on the Great Smoky Mountain Railway which offered spectacular views and plenty of family time.
Unfortunately the work doesn’t ever take a vacation so a big shout out to my daughter Katelyn for keeping an eye on things. She had a crash course in animal husbandry and I’m sure she’ll not soon forget 80 tons of chicken manure! We thank you all for your patience as we recharge our batteries and look forward to seeing you all at the market this week.
