Hey there, First name / friend!

I am still wildly inspired by the conversation that was held at last week’s Salon. This incredible group of folx came together to share openly and honestly about their big visions for our world and how we can use our businesses as a catalyst for that change. It’s conversations like these that light me up and fuel me for days after.

As I’ve continued to allow the conversation to percolate within my being these last few days, I wanted to share a bit more with you about what has come up for me in the wake of our gathering.

The question we posed was: How do we build a business for the world we envision?

Everyone went around to share their own vision for an ideal world. Quickly, a few key themes emerged; that of rest, connection, community, reciprocity, and regeneration.

We talked about a world where everyone is allowed to be completely themselves and share their gifts with others.

A world where rest is not only encouraged but established as a new normal and the cycles of nature (of which we humans are a part and often deny) are deeply honored.

A world where people and the collective good are valued over profits, growth happens at a rate we dictate, and intuition plays an active role in decision making.

Ultimately, I sat in admiration of these wise souls who are very clearly already putting this into action. They are building businesses that are supportive of their unique energetic capacities and desires, that are an external manifestation of their dreams for a more just world, and that are clear demonstrations that disrupt the status quo.

Through all of this, I walked away with these four lessons from our time together.

1. There is strength in surrender

Surrendering continues to be some of the hardest work that I personally navigate. It is that releasing of the grip I hold on expectations, veiled as the illusion of control, that can send me into a tailspin. I was raised in an environment where perseverance was rewarded and surrender was seen as giving up, which equaled failure. Rewriting that narrative for myself to truly understand and see the courage in letting go of the things that no longer serve me is a continual work in progress. These beautiful souls reminded me of the enormous strength in surrender. When we can clearly say no to what we no longer want, we clear the path for all of the Hell Yeses to present themselves.

2. Trust is the core component

It appeared as though what fuels these courageous beings to step into that surrender is an unyielding commitment to trust. Trust what? Themselves! Their inner knowing, their bodies, the whispers of their soul. They seem to possess an insatiable curiosity to consistently search for the ways of being and working that best support them. From what I can surmise, this unbelievable amount of trust stems from an honest dedication to a return to self, to give ample space to be exactly who they are, and to create space for a new world in which everyone is celebrated and needed for being who they are as well.

3. Honor yourself, cultivate your creativity, and the rest will follow.

From that place of stepping into deeper trust with oneself, it becomes apparent that the way to cultivate a level of trust that fuels the surrender is to create a system for your creativity to flourish. We each shared different perspectives on this — many of us mentioned how it’s an ever-evolving process, and yet it’s an important question that is revisited often. When we honor ourselves and develop our own system that supports our creativity, we take back our power from the oppressive systems that would have us think there is no other way but the 9 to 5, 40 hours per week (at least), constant hustle, and strive for optimum productivity at all costs. There is another way — the one that (you guessed it!) honors your distinct & precious needs.

4. Relish in utter joy.

When the three aforementioned elements are in place and become a regular practice, what seems so very clear is that joy abounds. Seeing these folx light up as they share their own personal stories of surrender, trust, and honoring themselves, it was apparent that hope and fulfillment await those who dare to venture on this path. So all of this is bringing me back to a most potent reminder: When we embark on this journey of surrender, trust, and honoring ourselves, we join the burgeoning groundswell of others who are creating a new paradigm.

When we can trust ourselves, we can create that new world we envision.

I’m so grateful that this longtime dream of mine has turned into a reality! My wish is to bring together small groups of diverse folks to have a monthly dialogue around a particular topic. (Think: 1920s-style salons with intimate dinners and interesting conversation… except we’ll do it 2020s-style, virtually.) We’ve hosted a couple now, and we’re already gearing up for the next one in April. If you would like to be added to the waitlist for a future Salon, please let me know here.
