THIS WEEK'S
NATIVE PLANT:
Spicebush
(Lindera benzoin)
Native to much of the eastern US, Spicebush is the perfect addition to moist areas in sun to part shade. Its yellow spring flowers are reminiscent of Forsythia and in fall, female plants produce bright red edible fruits that when dried can be used as a peppery spice. Essential oils of Spicebush are used for teas. It is a larval host plant for the Spicebush and Eastern Swallowtail butterflies.
