Colorado Water 
Sports Betting Revenue
While sports betting was slow in 2020, it quickly picked up towards the end of the fiscal year. This is good news for the Colorado Water Plan, as Proposition DD, passed in 2019, states that tax revenue from legal sports gambling in Colorado is set aside for Colorado Water Plan action items.

Due to the pandemic, there were concerns the plan would not receive funding from until late 2022, however, they were pleasantly surprised to find the state received $3.1 million in tax revenue from sports gambling in fiscal year 20-21. 

That means the Colorado Water Plan could see sports betting funds as soon as this fall, a whole year earlier than initially projected.

COVID and Water 
 A study from Cornell University and Food and Water Watch concluded that 9,000 deaths might have been avoided if water utilities had not cut off service to delinquent accounts. When the pandemic hit, many localities and states suspended water service shut offs to ensure sanitary conditions to slow the spread of the virus. However, many did others not, causing the virus to spread and affect many without access to water.

Mayo to the Rescue

One hundred and twenty miles of Israel’s coastline were coated in thick tar after a massive oil spill caused one of the greatest ecological disasters in the country’s history. While the source of the spill is unknown, the Israeli government is investigating. Meanwhile, the clean-up has begun with thousands of volunteers, soldiers and police officers. One of the many creatures affected are endangered green sea turtles. Many turtles were found to have oil in their eyes, nasal passages, and digestive tracts.

Employees at Israel's National Sea Turtle Rescue turned to mayonnaise, which they feed to the reptiles and also put on swabs to clean their eyes and noses. Live Science reports that the mayonnaise interacts with the tar making it thinner.  

Lecithin from egg yolks creates a barrier between the tar and the turtle's digestive tract, causing it to be less sticky, so it passes through the animals.
