May Happenings at the ASCP

Welcome! May's theme is food & gardens.

As we conclude the Spring 2021 semester, we wanted to share with you a special Auraria Campus event, upcoming volunteer opportunities, food and gardening tips, and so much more!

The event features displaced Aurarians and community activists telling their stories followed by a discussion with community members, student leaders, and Auraria faculty and staff on how to use the campus’s history to plan for the future. CU Denver, MSU Denver, the CCD, and AHEC will be putting on this event in celebration of Cinco de Mayo.

The planners hope the panel will bring to life the complex histories of the campus while also seeking solutions to political tensions that remain between campus institutions and displaced Aurarians. The panel and discussions increase awareness about how institutionalized discrimination created the conditions to build Auraria Campus and the legacies of those decisions. While participants may be concerned about contemporary issues of gentrification and displacement, the event highlights how these issues are not new, but rather ongoing social processes in Denver.

Join us after the gardening event this Thursday for a waste bin stickering extravaganza from 12pm - 2pm. We will meet at the picnic tables near the main entrance of the Tivoli (South side) to rebrand the campus with new stickers that help educate our students and staff on how to properly sort their waste.

All supplies will be provided. Just bring you!

Masks are absolutely mandatory and strict social distancing will be observed for both events on Thursday, May 6th.

If you have questions, please email please email Chris Herr at Chris.Herr@ahec.edu and/or Cassy Cadwallader at Cassy.Cadwallader@ahec.edu. We look forward to seeing you!

Speaking of Gardens…

The Auraria Community Garden still has two plots available for the 2021 growing season!

This organic garden is run through a partnership with Denver Urban Gardens and hosts 16 raised beds on the south side of the Science Building. If you or your department is interested in owning a plot and can commit to 1) being on campus at least 1-2x a week this summer and 2) contributing 3 communal volunteer hours per month to the garden, we'd like to hear from you! Plots are filled on a first-come-first-served basis, and after the plots are filled we keep a waitlist that carries over year-to-year. Email aurariacommunitygarden@gmail.com ASAP to express your interest!

Kait Kostelnik (left) and Marlena Fay Harwood (right)

We have two very special Sustainability Heroes this month, CU Denver students Kait Kostelnik and Marlena Fay Harwood!!

Kait has done some fantastic work for the Auraria Sustainable Campus program in the past, like animating our Truth Behind the Trash film. She is a a Colorado native and an artist focusing mainly on acrylic painting and photography, but also works in design and videography. Much of her work is based on sustainability and nature due to her deep connection and passion about preserving it.

Marlena is a second-year graduate student in the M.S. Environmental Science program in the Dept. of Geography and Environmental Science at CU Denver. Marlena’s interest in Environmental Science stemmed from a naturalist internship she had after receiving her B.S. in Biology from UT Austin. She spent the summer leading nature hikes, snowshoe excursions, and teaching residents and visitors of Eagle County, Colorado of the importance of conservation and science, and she knew it was time to start practicing what she preached.

Congratulations Class of 2021!

The ASCP congratulates all of the Spring 2021 graduates on a job well done! We wanted to give an extra special shoutout to ASCP student employees and CU Denver Spring graduates Phoebe Loyd (left) and Abi Shea (right).

Phoebe is our Digital Media and Marketing Specialist and is graduating with dual Masters degrees in Landscape Architecture + Urban and Regional Planning.

Abi is our Student Marketing and Media Associate who oversees Social Media. She is graduating with a BA in Digital Strategy Communication and a minor in Sustainability.

(5/7) 5 pm - 7 pm

St. Cajetans, Auraria Campus

“Through the art of Rozales and Fresquez, both of whom identify as Displaced Aurarians, viewers will be transported to a time when Auraria was the home of a large and proud Latinx population. The photos by Rozales feature his family and their deep ties to Auraria, such as the communion photo of his aunt which happened within the walls of St. Cajetan's. The paintings by Fresquez not only focus on his Latinx heritage, but also commemorate the unique cultural pride of old Auraria."
