WHY DO I JOURNAL?
Remind, Motivate & Revisit
Words by Tory Wright
I travel light and often look through my possessions to edit and shed previous lives. A few photo albums have survived, but not much else. However, my journals go with me everywhere. I've been writing in journals since I was ten years old, and have a box full of them. Some journals are barely written on, a few careful pages in grade school cursive.
Some are journals are from my travels, holiday and business. They are filled with ticket stubs, postcards, candy wrappers, wine labels and even dried flowers. There are journals in which every page is filled and ones that jump from month-to-month or even year-to-year. The books vary in sizes and number of pages, but all are a piece of my personal tale.
Why Write in a Journal?
What motivates me to record life as it rolls along. As I look through my piles of notebooks, I can revisit myself at sixteen, twenty-five, forty and well, on and on. Sometimes thoughts from the previous year can be as interesting as ones from years ago. I re-visit myself at a times where I was starting my business, navigating motherhood, and all of my travels. Details, now forgotten, come back on the page, sketches and words and mementos bring the times lived so much closer. How interesting to see how many life concerns remain the same: Where am I going? Who will I be, and how can I find the time?
They say, "Life happens when you're waiting for it to start". Looking through my journals reminds me there's been a lot of life so far.
