This summer, the Sparta-Hancock Library will host a Five-Week Learning Program for elementary age children about honey bees! The program will take place every Friday from June 4th to July 2nd at 10:30am - noon.

The 2021 Virtual Young Harris Beekeeping Institute will take place this week May 13 - 14. It's not too late to register for this wonderful program that includes noted speakers from around the world.

OBSERVATIONS IN OUR HIVES

Monitoring Nectar FlowRight now, we are watching the hives to see how much nectar the bees are bringing in. It seems patchy. We have had lower temperatures, wind, and rain that have created obstacles for honey this season. We aren't seeing as much privet in our area as we have observed in other parts of Georgia. A late frost in April might be the culprit? Privet makes up approximately 60 - 70% of our wildflower honey. As such, we're anticipating that our honey production may not be as strong as last year and we may have to provide more feed for our bees in the coming months.
