Weekend Rest + Reflect

Hello my dear friend,

It is Memorial Day here in the United States, which for most people in the USA makes today still a part of their weekend ;) There is lots of travel and celebrating going on as we take the time today to remember those who sacrificed so much for our freedoms. If you or a loved one served in the military, thank you so much for your service!

With today being Memorial Day, I have been thinking a lot about the importance of memorials and remembrance in our own every day lives.

I don't know about you, but it is so easy for me to remember and recall the toughest and most difficult moments. It's easy to become so caught up in the hard thing that is happening right now. There is a play by play forever etched in our memory and is easy to recall.

Apparently, this is pretty normal for us in our humanity. The Israelites, who saw God move over and over again in such mighty ways; including the parting of the red sea, they too were prone to getting caught up in their current struggle that they so easily forgot the works of God displayed in their lives.

When we are in the thick of our struggle, it can be hard to remember all that God has done. But, Scripture is filled with appeals for us to remember the goodness of God. Why? Remembering brings us into thankfulness and worship. Remembering helps us hold onto the hope that is found in Jesus, even whenever we are struggling so much.

If you are currently struggling and can't see how God can possibly be moving in your circumstance, I invite you to remember His goodness and the ways He has displayed His power and love to you in the past. Because even though our circumstances change, He does not. The God that was faithful to deliver you in the past is the same God who will be faithful to deliver you even now. The same God that parted the Red Sea for the Israelites is the same God that is parting red seas in our own lives even today.

  • I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your wonders of old. Psalm 77:11, ESV
  • I remember the days of old; I meditate on all that you have done; I ponder the work of your hands. Psalm 143:5, ESV
  • I remember your name in the night, O Lord, and keep your law. Psalm 119:55, ESV
  • But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. John 14:26, ESV
  • In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 1 Corinthians 11:25, ESV
  • Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, Psalm 103:2, ESV

Rest

Rest in knowing that He never ever changes. The same power and love that showed up for you in the past and delivered you from your past is the same God that is working even now.

Reflect

  • In your journal or on a piece of paper, take a few minutes to write out a couple of instances where God showed up in His power and love on your behalf. How have you seen God work in your life?
  • What are some of your favorite miracles and works found in Scripture, both the Old Testament and the New?
  • Does remembering what God has done and is capable of help you see your current circumstance differently? If so, how?

Pray with me

Abba Father,

I come before you and I thank you for all of the ways that you have shown up in my life. I admit that sometimes, it can take me a little bit to remember what you have done. Help me shift my focus to remember the works and miracles that you displayed all throughout Scripture. Help me to remember all of the ways I have seen you show up in my own life. Thank you that you never leave me to my own devices, but that all the power of Heaven is behind me. I give you praise and thanks for all that you have done, are doing, and all that you will do. I love you o Lord my Strength.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.
