following up on that…

Follow UP: a report on six months without instagram

I rarely send back-to-back emails like this, but holy cow! You all were so encouraging and supportive about my last email (and you had a ton of questions!). It was so good to hear back from those of you who responded to my email and started a conversation—I've loved connecting with each of you.

But to answer those common questions in detail, I wanted to follow up with this email today. I'm sharing a few of the ways I've shifted my business marketing since leaving instagram.

What other social media do you use?

Pinterest! Pinterest has been a key factor in our social media strategy. I use Tailwind to batch-schedule my Pinterest posts for a couple of months in advance. At our peak performance last year, we had 3 million monthly views—and consistent lead generation too. Video and stories are performing really well on Pinterest right now, so it might be worth a try for you too! Read this post for my Pinterest tips.

How else do you get leads?

I've been incredibly grateful for my past clients and the referral network they provide. Even in our digital world, word of mouth is still so valuable. Remember, you can always reach out to past clients in order to stay top of mind for referrals.

Google has also been climbing as a lead source. We have many years of blog posts that contribute to our SEO… but honestly? Here's my unpopular opinion on that ;)

Where do you go for inspiration?

It has been so refreshing to seek inspiration outside of Instagram. I love reading books—especially books outside of my industry: books about fine art / art history, gardening, architecture, interior design. I've also enjoyed spending more time outdoors: birding and hiking have become restorative hobbies that often bring creative inspiration along the way.

Stepping away from Instagram has also encouraged me to return to sketching and drawing, reconnecting to the physical elements of creativity too.

What do you do with your free time?

Reading, Birding, and Knitting. Yes, I've reached my full granny potential.

If you're not feeling like Instagram aligns with your vision for your life and business in this season, I want to encourage you that there are other options that can help you find success in your marketing.

And if you are enjoying Instagram and receiving solid leads from it—more power to you! I believe it's all about finding the way that you want to invest your time, and that can look different for each of us.

Wishing you all the success in whatever marketing strategy you pursue!
