Happy Summer, lovelies!

June has been crazy for me, and July promises to be JUST as nuts. I have book due at the end of June, and another (the 8th Bread Shop mystery, Bread over Troubled Water) due August 1st. To say I'm behind would be an understatement. This'll be me by the end of summer: šŸ¤Ŗ

I am taking a momentary break from my writing to share a little bit about one of my favorite characters in the Book Magic series, Grey Hawthorne.

Grey and Pippin are twins born 73 seconds apart. They were orphaned when they were just kids, and were then raised by their father's parents in Greenville, NC.

While reading has always been hard for Pippin, Grey devoured books. Unlike Pippin, he didn't have the obstacle of words and letters twisting and reversing. He's also not a bibliomancer. Like his father, Leo, he loves Tolkien--a good thing since he's named after Gandalf the Grey.

Grey is well aware of the curse that plagues the Lane family: the women die in childbirth and the men are swallowed by the sea. Lately, though, he doesn't seem to care. He's tired of living half a life, as he sees it. In Murder at Sea Captain's Inn, Pippin discovers just how disconnected Grey is and how much he's putting himself at risk.

It's been so interesting seeing Grey's character and conflicts evolve in the second Book Magic mystery. He's a complex man with complicated feelings about his family, the curse, his sister, and his future.

I haven't figured out who I'd want to play him in the TV series (if there were ever to be oneā€¦from my lips to the universe!). If you have any ideas, please share them with me!

Here's a snapshot of Grey:

  • Height: Just about 6ā€™. His mother, Cassie, was 5ā€² 5ā€³ and his dad, Leo, was 6ā€™ 2ā€.
  • Hair: Dark brown hair like Leo.
  • Slightly darker-complected than Pippin, who is pale and freckly.
  • Grey is a woodworker. He creates custom pieces and in Murder at Sea Captainā€™s Inn, he opens his custom woodworking business. He oversaw and worked on all the renovations for the inn in Murder in Devil's Cove. Heā€™s good with his hands, self-educated, and outdoorsy.
  • Grey loves to read. His favorite author is Tolkien, just like his dad, Leo. He was named after Gandalf the Grey. He love sci-fi and fantasy books because they are an escape from the harsh reality of the Lane curse.
  • After high school, Grey worked with a contractor in Greenville. This is where he learned all he knows about building. Heā€™s taught himself (through reading and research) to build furniture.
  • The loss of his parents made Pippin and him rely on each other. As twins, they already have a tight bond. As orphans, itā€™s even tighter.
  • Grey is figuring out how he fits with the Lane family given the curse, which he wants nothing more than to deny, and his inability to do anything about it.

Generation after generation of Lane women die in childbirth, while the sea claims the men.

Pippin Lane Hawthorneā€™s grand opening of Sea Captainā€™s Inn is tainted when a scholar studying the Lost Colony of Roanoke is brutally murdered. Like the black crow that hangs around the old house, could the untimely death be a harbinger of dark things to come?

When her twin brother, Grey, begins bucking the curse by risking his life in the waters of the Outer Banks, Pippin lives in terror that heā€™ll be the next Lane male to be swallowed by the sea. Now she must use her gift of bibliomancy to save her brother, solve the murder, and end a two thousand year old pact.
