The challenge is raising children and grandchildren that know God

Isaiah 59:21

“As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the LORD; My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed's seed, saith the LORD, from henceforth and forever.”

God makes a strong and challenging statement to Isaiah. I would like to think that He is guaranteeing to Israel that their children and grandchildren would all follow Him faithfully. But, history does not tell that story.

So, what exactly does this passage promise. Not every offspring will render obedience to the words that have been put by God into the mouth of the prophet

But the first generations can and should do all they can to plant the word of God in the hearts of their next generations. When His word finds a receptive heart, it will be planted in that generation. And, if that generation plants it faithfully in their next generation, it will flourish in that generation.

Where we fail to actively plant God’s word in our own next generations, we are left to wonder: what will happen with the knowledge of God in them?

My good friend and colleague Wes Slough has written some excellent suggestions for grandparents. I commend them to you in my most recent blog “Notes to my Grandchildren”
