It has taken 4 years, but our patience has paid off. We finally have an abundant peach crop. We have 5 trees that are just bursting with yummy peaches. Our orchard (if you could call it that) is host to a combination of peach, apple, and plumb trees as well as chickens, turkeys, pigs, sheep, and occasionally cows. We only have 5 mature peach trees currently as most of the apple trees were replaced with last year with young peach trees. The plum trees are mature, but we haven’t gotten any fruit yet (or blossoms for that matter).
We intentionally put the chickens, turkeys and pigs in this area so they could take advantage of the fallen fruit. I failed to anticipate that the birds would be impatient and just start eating the fruit right off the tree! The biggest awakening was when the sheep stripped off the leaves of the newly planted trees and eventually started eating the bark off. A few strands of electric poly-wire has kept the sheep at bay, but I’ve resigned myself to sharing the ripe fruit with chickens & turkeys. But that’s ok, there’s plenty to go around.
For the past few weeks I’ve been enjoying a few peaches when I go out to feed the animals. Though not a fan of peaches, Molly has agreed to make me a peach cobbler! To satisfy my peach needs in the off season, I’ll be canning the extras over the next few week.
