Weekend Rest + Reflect

Weathering the Unexpected - God of the good and the hard

Hello my dear friend,

Thank you so much for your patience with the last two week’s devotions.

This past week..well the last two weeks really, have been full of the unexpected.

I didn’t expect to have 8 episodes in a two week period, I didn’t expect to start a new treatment plan, I didn’t expect to fall in love with wheelchair dancing, and I didn’t expect for traveling domestically as a wheelchair user to be so incredibly difficult and rewarding at the same time.

I didn’t expect to create such deep friendships so quickly with women I had only met online until last week.

The thing about the unexpected is that it can mingled with both good and hard at the same time.

I think that so often we can forget that good doesn’t not necessarily mean easy. That our victories can coincide with things that leave us tired, weary, and grieving. And in my humanity, I don’t want that. I don’t want the tired, yucky parts. I just want the victory. But sometimes, the good and the hard go hand in hand.

So if you are someone who is right now experiencing the good and the hard at the same time, I just want to give you a little bit of encouragement. Just because it’s hard doesn’t negate the good that is going on. In the same way, just because something is good doesn’t mean you have to force yourself to not feel and embrace the hard moments.

Give yourself space and freedom to feel both and take them both before the throne of God.

Invite Him in to both the good and hard. Because in both the good and hard He is moving and has purpose.

Maybe you are reading this today and you are thinking to yourself that you are experiencing so much more hard than good. When will the good start to show up?? You are not a “bad Christian” for feeling like things are really hard. Let yourself acknowledge the full weight of what you are going through and let yourself sit in that with the Lord.

He loves you and will continue to be faithful to you and fulfill His promises to you that He made in His Word. If today is much more hard than good, He will make a way forward for you. But don't be afraid to talk to the Lord and tell Him how you are feeling. He can handle it.

  • the Lord appeared to him from far away. I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you. Jeremiah 31:3, ESV
  • He sent from on high, he took me; he drew me out of many waters. He rescued me from my strong enemy and from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me. They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the Lord was my support. He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me. Psalm 18:16-19, ESV

Rest

Rest in knowing that the good and the hard can coexist. He is working in both for His glory and your good. He isn't finished yet <3

Pray with me

Father God,

Thank for all you do and all that you allow us to be through you. God I lift up to you the good and the hard. I know that you are working in the hard just like you are working in the good and that both have purpose. I ask that you allow me to come and sit before your throne with both the heights of the good and the depths of my sadness and grief. Allow me to process through your Word and through spending time in your presence. Help me cling to you when I feel furthest from you.

I love you o Lord my strength, Jesus.

Amen.
