You all know that watercolor is my favorite paint medium, so this week's #CreateWithCatCoq challenge is all about watercolor! This week, I'd love you to experiment with one of my favorite (controversial 🤭) watercolor techniques - Watercolor Blooms.

What is a watercolor bloom?

Watercolor blooms have become one of my signature techniques in my paintings. A watercolor bloom is created by pooling a lot of water and pigment into one area of your painting. It blooms out in an unexpected way, and the paint dries with a crinkly effect around the edges. I think this adds a ton of visual interest to a piece, and I love incorporating blooms in my artwork. Here are a few examples of what watercolor blooms look like in my paintings.

The reason these are controversial is that most traditional watercolor artists will go out of their way to avoid this happening in their watercolor paintings. But I think it adds such interesting visual appeal, and I have fully embraced them in my artwork!
