Diving into Tension…
Tension can be reductively defined as two forces pulling on opposite directions, as we see in a simple tug of war game… Consider this, though they are pulling opposite - they are still connected by that tightening chord - that chord is “Tension”.
A Tension Story
When we initially meet another soul, we exist in an “unknown” space with them. Occasionally we have the thrill to share a mutual joy in one another's presence, the “unknown” space between us floods with a peculiar sensation, a longing to know the unknown, of tension. There are rushes of dopamine as we find little bread crumbs of familiarity we attach knowledge to, easing our tension.
We often do not even notice as our comfort grows, our tension is slipping away. And sometimes - BLAM - tension again, they've pissed us off, hurt us, ignored us…
In this moment we are typically entirely caught up in our own feelings we forget something incredible has occurred - they have wafted into the unknown again, so have you to them.
The tug of war on the rope begins to tighten, each pulling to bring the other closer to their point of view. The miracle is in that rope, in the grip so tight and the pulling. It may not feel good but it's a powerful human suggestion of longing to be doing so.
In our last connection we spoke about Paradoxes (← link in case you missed it) allowing / holding Tension is an equal emotional acrobatics. It is a little messy, and a little absurd but ultimately graces us with a little more tensile strength for the wily ways of our world.
