As the school year launches, these career tips for women of color seem equally valuable for girls of color in school. Share them with the teen or tween in your life!

  1. Clarify your life plan and your values. The plan keeps you focused, while clarifying your values helps you change course if necessary.
  2. Cultivate relationships with mentors and allies. Actively seek them out; both are crucial for your success.
  3. Be open to constructive criticism. Understand others’ motivations so you can distinguish between helpful and harmful criticism.
  4. Prioritize your health.  Women of color are more susceptible to stress-related health problems.
  5. Commit yourself fully to your success.  Capitalize on your strengths, but push yourself outside your comfort zone.
  6. Know your worth. Advocate for yourself and don’t let others define or confine you.
