Students and Staff Return to School After Storm

Hurricane Ida hit Louisiana on Sunday, Aug. 29, leaving over 1 million people without power. The Category 4 hurricane left significant damages throughout the state that is seeing high rates of COVID-19 due to low vaccination rates and the highly contagious delta variant. After assessing the storm situation, the East Baton Rouge Parish School System delayed the reopening of schools to Wednesday, Sept. 8. In addition, Superintendent Dr. Nico Narcisse and the school system formed an action plan for students and parents impacted by the storm. California Restaurant Gives to New Orleans Community
 

The San Diego restaurant NOLA on 5th teamed up with the American Red Cross to raise over $5,000 for people in the New Orleans community affected by Hurricane Ida. NOLA on 5th is owned by New Orleans native Andrew Boyer. The restaurant created a comfort food menu for its customers during Labor Day weekend, where 50% of the proceeds ordered from the menu were donated. Boyer said that he felt like he had to do something after watching the devastation on TV. "I have friends there, my family is there and I felt like I had to help out," he said.

EBRPSS hosts drive-thru COVID-19 testing
 

On Wednesday, Sept. 8, EBRPSS held a drive-thru testing site for students, parents and school staff at the Instructional Resource Center Building. The free event was held from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.

NASA Maps Out Deltas
 

NASA is working on a five-year, $15 million study of the Mississippi River delta system in Louisiana, and it is bringing us along for the ride! The Associated Press produced a video highlighting the work NASA is doing in Louisiana. NASA stated that the state is "the window of the future” with the work and study.

LSU Helps Communities Prepare for Future Disasters 
 

Researchers at LSU Health New Orleans partnered with two dozen community leaders in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, St. Bernard Parish and St. John the Baptist Parish to help use their research and facts into actionable data. The community leaders helped residents prepare for and recover from severe weather events and flooding. In addition, LSU helped the study by elevating the concerns in these communities. The communities included in the study consist of mostly Black homeowners who live below the poverty level and below sea level in the wetlands, canals and the Mississippi River.
