Welcome back to MOOD. Thrilled you are here.

You may notice something different about me these days. Yes, it is my sparkle. I owe it all to Ms. Bobbi Brown, makeup guru and Queen of Reinvention, who created these liquid eyeshadows that I am truly obsessing over.

During the day, I swipe “Ice” on my lids with the magic wand. At night, I amp it up with "Sparkle Wash." The result? Fab-u-lousity.

My go-to daily planner is made by Appointed, and I found it at my fave concept store in Chicago, Space 519.

Appointed has gorgeous calendars, notebooks planners that remind me of the British brand, Smythson.  And the good news is no skipping across the pond. This company is based in D.C., the paper comes from a U.S. paper mill, and it appears from their packaging and ethos that they give a damn about the environment.

My problem is I literally want everything…

Reckoning: Protest. Defiance. Resilience — a phenomenal new show at The Washington D.C. National Museum of African American History and Culture.

It opens with a small American Flag by the great Jean-Michel Basquiat, and from there you follow the meticulously curated exhibition which explores the Black Lives Matter movement and the history of violence against African Americans in the United States.

Painter Amy Sherald’s portrait of Breonna Taylor was unveiled last Friday and will be on view until May 2022.

Do not miss this show. Take your kids or, hey, take someone else's kids! Tickets are free (I love that about D.C.) but they go fast.

My Top Recs for the Remainder of 2021

Growing up with no TV in the house, I was reluctant to buy one for my apartment. When I put Samsung's Frame in my bedroom, the pandemic instantly became more endurable.

The downside? Brilliant shows like White Lotus, Search Party and Call My Agent totally interrupted my reading habits. So, hereby I make a public pledge that between now and the end of 2021, I am going to finish all of these amazing titles that are screaming “Read me, Melanie!”

  • How the Word is Passed a non-fiction work by Clint Smith (I have already started this one, and wow. Thanks for the recommendation Clare!).
  • Harlem Shuffle, a novel by Colson Whitehead
  • Stones, a book of poems by Kevin Young

P.S. for all of you New Yorkers, Colson Whitehead & Kevin Young will be doing live readings at St. Ann's Church on Monday Oct 4 2021 7:00pm - 8:00pm. Tickets here.

See you there?

As a game-a-holic, my go-to was Celebrity until my pal’s Steph and Dan pulled out The Hygge Game (pronounced hue-guh).

Roughly translated from Danish and Norwegian, hygge means “cozy camaraderie,” which is just what I felt when I played this super fun, thoughtful Q+A game. Just when you think you know everything about your friends…watch out.

Drop a line at studio@melaniedunea.com with any tips or things you are loving.

Stay in the MOOD.
