At least twice a year I make the trek to pick up our organic chicken feed from Free Wing Farms. After doing my daily chores and knocking out a few emails, I hook up the trailer and load up the empty barrels for the 2 hour drive down to Gonzales, TX. It’s a beautiful drive through the varying ecoregions of Texas – from the Post Oak Savannah to the Blackland Prairies through the Lost Pines culminating at the uppermost edge of the South Texas Plains. It takes about an hour to load up the 6,000lbs of grain into the barrels before starting the drive home. The three tons of grain may seem like a lot, but between the chickens and the turkeys, it won't last long.
Free Wing Farms is a small but growing operation run by two former Marine Corp helicopter pilots – James Zafero and Joe Hornacky. In addition to flying in Iraq for a few years, Joe flew the president on Marine Corps One. Now, though, they've settled down to a more rural life. The company not only operates a grain mill, but also sells organic eggs through multiple channels. It's good to support a fellow business owner and veteran that has great bulk prices and friendly service, so I don't mind the six hour day.
