HEALTHY EMOTIONS + OILS

When talking about emotions, we must mention the limbic system. The limbic system is a system of nerves and networks in the brain that controls basic emotions. It is the emotional brain. It supports five major functions: emotions, behavior, motivation, long-term memory, and sense of smell.

Essential oils can be used to tap directly into the limbic system to stimulate memories and emotions. As you inhale essential oils, the tiny molecules enter the nasal cavity and pass by the olfactory bulb. Your olfactory bulb is a part of your limbic system and therefore your response to an aroma is going to be emotional before it can be rational. This is great news! That means you can use essential oils to recall memories, both good and bad. If they are bad, you can use the oils to help you release cellular memories stored in the body, allowing you to process and move past them.

We all regularly come in contact with reactions to smells. You walk into the house at dinner time and smell your favorite meal being prepared. Your emotions are instantly triggered to the fond memories you have of that meal and you feel joy. You smell the cologne your grandfather used to wear. It instantly triggers emotions based on your relationship. If you had a good relationship, you may feel emotions like love and joy. If you had a bad relationship or he has passed away, you may feel anger or sadness.

In our bodies, the limbic system is directly connected to the parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance. Essential oils can have profound physiological and psychological effects on all of this. Smells have the ability to induce the brain to stimulate the release of hormones and neurochemicals that in turn alter the body’s physiology and behavior.

Essential oils can penetrate cell membranes and cross the brain-blood barrier within SECONDS. This allows them to reach the emotional center of our brain, this is where all of our emotions are stored. Essential oils support the body to come back into balance without harmful side effects or chemical based products. They can have a powerful influence over how we think, how we feel and how we behave. Because of oils bringing balance to emotions, we can do that simply through smelling them, through scents.

Do you, or someone you know, deal with a chronic body pain? Maybe you have tried medications or physical therapy and you still can’t get it to go away? Okay, I’m going to suggest you think about something that might sound crazy. What if this physical pain is caused by emotional baggage from your past?
I encourage you to watch this Toxic Emotions Class taught by my friend, Angie Vaughters. She has dealt with extreme chronic back pain for much of her life and has found great results through working on her toxic emotions.

We all have energy that flows throughout our body on pathways called meridians. When the energy isn’t flowing properly, our body doesn't work as well. Tapping on these meridian points breaks up the energy blockages, which allows people to go from being stressed to feeling better helps you access your body's energy and send signals to the part of the brain that controls stress. When combining oils along with this practice, it can be even more effective.  I have personally used it when I have trouble falling asleep at night.

FEELINGS GUIDE FOR OUR KIDS!

Every day our kids are having new experiences and learning new things. This is a lot of emotional processing. Often struggling to verbalize and process how they are treated by others, what they are learning, or what they need, some of the best habits we can create are those that provide them a safe place to share, be heard, and release emotions in a healthy way. Essential oils can play a key role in this process. The sense of smell is our only sense that bypasses our conscious “regulation” interception and moves straight to the cortex of the brain to go to work. So subconsciously smell can send messages to the body about well-being, memories, or danger without requiring us to figure it out first. Perfect for kids and they can learn to apply themselves too!  Apply over heart, wrists, tummy, or feet.  Just pop a roller top on and let them go!

Compounds like sesquiterpenes can delete bad information in cellular memory and are present in almost all essential oils. Simply put, essential oils can work with the brain to clear pathways, move out unwanted sludge, and release creativity and joy.

Here are some favorite oils and blends we use in our home!

+ Release is a blend with a relaxing aroma that facilitates the ability to let go of anger and frustration. It also promotes harmony and balance when diffused. Apply over liver

+ Joy is a blend containing oils beneficial for choosing to allow the positive in life to take the upper hand as we focus on gratitude for all the good in our experiences. Apply over heart and stomach

+ Frankincense essential oil has an earthy, uplifting aroma that’s perfect for grounding and connectedness. Create a safe and comforting environment when you diffuse or inhale this empowering oil—a perfect opportunity to collect scattered thoughts and process a busy day. Apply over thyroid, on crown of head, and inhale deeply.

+ Stress Away is a vacation in a bottle. A unique combination of Lime and Vanilla that is the perfect blend of tropical and citrus. Such a sweet and delicious-smelling way to breathe deeply and calm overwhelming emotions! We love diffusing this oil.

+ White Angelica has been especially great for my tween/teens as they can hold on to negative thoughts or feelings from others. Take a drop, rub hands together, and rub on shoulders and arms.  Then use a “brush off” motion over the entire body, from head to toe.  I do this every night before i go to sleep - helps so much!

You've got this! Remember to be consistent with your oils.  Set them out and use throughout the day.
