Friday Favorites

Good Morning, and Happy Friday!

How is your October going?
And, how are you doing adjusting to the darker mornings and the darker evenings?
I've been trying to channel the tips from last week's video, but as someone who loves summer and morning (versus winter and evening), it continues to be a work in progress (every year!). How about for you?

(Does anyone have tips for making the most of the dark evenings? If so, I'll share them back in a future edition.)

Earlier this week, I received a text from a colleague's sister, letting me know about an upcoming celebration of life for my colleague.

As we chatted a bit via text, I asked, “Was he able to live his dream of selling all of his stuff, moving to Puerto Rico, and buying a scooter?”

“No,” she said. “It got him first.”

The last time I had seen my colleague, he was winding down and taking only a few final jobs. He told me with delight in his eyes that he couldn't wait to sell everything and live a simple life. He would use the proceeds from selling his stuff to buy a scooter and fund his island life.
He smiled as he shared his vision.

As I learned from his sister this week, he didn't have the chance.

I haven't been able to stop thinking about my colleague, that final conversation, the delight in his eyes, and the fact that his situation is not unique.

It has led to the question:
Why Not Now?

The thing we most want to do,
The place we most want to go,
The hobby we most want to learn.

Why not now?

The blog we want to start,
The organization we want to start volunteering with,
The scrapbook we want to finish.

Why not now?

I find that in many cases, the things that we dream of doing are not lavish.
They often don't cost a lot of money.
Many times, they can exist harmoniously alongside our day job or within our back yard.
Other times, they may lead us out of what a dear friend and client called “comfortable mediocrity” and into less comfortable growth and expansion.

Whatever it is that we most want to do, we might ponder:
What is one small step that I can take toward this vision, from right now, right here today?
What is the smallest concrete action that will move me in this direction?

What is the thing you most long to do?
If you'd like, drop me a note and let me know.
I'll hold your vision alongside you.

With that, we will move to this week's list of favorites.

As always, thank you for being here; for being part of the Zing Collaborative Community; and for reading.

Wishing you a wonderful Friday and weekend ahead!
With Appreciation,
Sarah

Curiosity: do we think these leadership lessons still fully apply, given the turn of events in season two? What else should be added to the list with this turn of events?
For anyone else who aspires to be more of a minimalist but isn't naturally a minimalist, this list is a great place to start. Some of these hit rather close to home (literally and figuratively)…

A lovely, gentle backdrop to play while working or while working to embrace these darker, quieter moments of fall.

Thank you, Kenn, for telling me about this album!

If you love coffee and are trying to drink less, this is the only substitute that I have found to be somewhat similar to the real deal. It absorbs easily in hot or cold water, and you can adjust the thickness as desired.

As always: this is of course not official medical advice.

After you send in your old cell phone, this organization will take the devices to either a refurbisher or a recycler. They use the proceeds to send international calling cards to troops overseas. You can also send in your old tablets or MP3 players.

“Possessing a creative mind, after all, is a bit like having a boarder collie for a pet: It needs to work, or else it will cause you an outrageous amount of trouble. Give your mind a job to do, or else it will find a job to do, and you might not like the job it invents (eating the couch, digging a hole through the living room floor, biting the mailman, etc.) It has taken me years to learn this, but it does seem to be the case that if I am not actively creating something, then I am probably actively destroying something (myself, a relationship, or my own peace of mind).”

QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER

REFLECTIONS & INQUIRIES

06
  1. What is one thing that you long to do?
  2. What is one small step that will move you in this direction?
  3. What is the smallest concrete action you could take?
  4. Who could you enlist for support or accountability?

The next circle will likely launch in spring of 2022.

The women who join these circles are, quite simply, phenomenal.

More specifically, the circles are for women who:

  • Identify as both heart-centered and highly driven.
  • Are creative and compassionate.
  • Lead with a great love and care for their team members.
  • Have 10+ years of work experience.
  • Are leading people, projects and/or teams - or have done so in the past.

Please feel free to drop me a note by replying to this email if you'd like to talk more in the upcoming weeks about whether this feels like the right fit for you.

Embracing Conflict will be returning in its virtual format in early 2022. This course is offered in partnership with UW Madison. It will be held on two back to back mornings and focuses on how we can embrace and work with the conflict and challenges that arise.
