From our sanctuary to yours...
MAGIC MIGRATION!

First name / Friend,, on a recent business trip to Kansas, I was reminded over and over again of the iconic Wizard Of Oz exclamation, “There's no place like home.” And certainly for us humans, the comfort of a warm bed and familiar surrounding is a sanctuary of our very own. Yet, for many of our animal friends, home is a transient and impermanent place. It seems that just as nests are built, cocoons hatched and babies born, our amazing animal friends are on the move again, pulled by an instinctive urge that is one of the miracles of the natural world. At the sanctuary, we work hard to educate about these migration cycles by providing experts and free programming to the community. We also walk our talk by ensuring our meadows and woodlands stay pesticide free and welcoming to the creatures who live or visit with us. As always, thank you for doing your part and helping us to do ours!

MIGRATORY SUPPORT
HOW TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Keep feeders and bird baths clean
Cleaning feeding stations and bird baths is an important way to avoid disease and reduce mosquitoes.

Eliminate pesticides and create backyard habitats
Providing safe and chemical-free environments for migratory animals is imperative as they restore and replenish for their strenuous journeys.

City dwellers turn off your lights
Birds traveling through cities with large buildings and bright lights can become disoriented and collide into structures. Turning off lights between 11pm and sunrise can give their senses the help they need to continue.

Reduce litter and plastic footprint
Animals can easily get tangled in discarded fishing line or sick from garbage, waste and debris. Pick up trash when you can and dispose properly (don't forget to cut the strings on those discarded face masks!)

Install glass or window treatments
Prevent birds from hitting windows with a variety of inexpensive glass treatments available for your home.

Bird friendly coffee? Who knew!
According to conservation specialist, Andrés Anchondo, bird friendly coffee is an easy way to make a difference to our feathered friends. “After oil, coffee is the most traded commodity in the world. To meet demand, coffee is often grown on monoculture plantations across the world, which cover hundreds of thousands of acres and reduce habitat for birds and wildlife. However, there is a better alternative. Shade-grown coffee, cultivated under existing tree canopies, doesn't require deforestation, leaving habitat intact for wildlife. It also tastes great.”
