In this edition of Rooted Musings, we focus on EMDR Therapy and how it can guide those on their own path to mental health healing. |
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing EMDR therapy is used to empower clients to heal from past traumatic and disturbing life experiences that can leave the client feeling depressed, insecure, or hopeless. It can also be used to resolve a myriad of mental health challenges and to prepare for future events. The clinician uses EMDR to help activate the client’s own healing processes. Unlike talk therapy, EMDR therapy triggers natural healing processes that exist within the client already. It is an effective and clinically supported way to move through those things that challenge us. |
There are eight phases to EMDR therapy. Through these eight phases, the clinician and client work together to first build a solid base of emotional regulation for the client. Then the client identifies the target (or triggering and distressed memories) on which to work. The client and therapist then use bilateral stimulation, which may be specific eye movements, to process the disturbing feelings associated with the targeted memories. At the end of each session, the therapist and client together again use the bilateral stimulation to help the client settle into a feeling of felt safety. |
Amy recommends EMDR therapy for clients who have experienced trauma in their past. This trauma might include single events of developmental, relational, or complex trauma. "Another study found that 77% of combat veterans were free of PTSD after 12 sessions." |
Clients experiencing complex and developmental trauma can also benefit from EMDR Therapy. According to Michael G. Quirke, an EMDR therapist in San Francisco, “a brain that can change is capable of putting to rest old feelings, learning new ways of responding, and interpreting thoughts and feelings differently. The way you think, feel, and respond as a result of trauma can be rewritten and healing can become more possible.” |
