I hope you are having a good weekend so far!

New month, and a new moon.

Astrologers consider the 48 hours after the new moon the prime time for setting intentions for the next few weeks. In farming traditions, the new moon is the time when the soil is most fertile and wet. Therefore, farmers and gardeners often plant seeds then because it is when the moon’s lunar gravity pulls water up.

I choose to believe this is also a fertile time for us to plant intention seeds we want to grow by writing them out. The new moon is  a time I set aside to journal to reflect on what's working and what isn't.

I draw a line down the middle of a piece of paper and on one side write out what I want less of and on the other side write out what I want more of.

Regardless of what phase the moon is in, writing without the intention of anyone reading it (journaling) has been my most consistent self-care routine over nearly 10 years. It slows me down enough to notice my emotions and figure out what I’m feeling.

I began recommending it to friends, prescribing journaling prompts for their specific situations, and in 2016 ended up publishing an entire book about it. Since then, I’ve led writing workshops allll over and lately on zoooom.

This week talked about journaling with a high school in Florida that uses my book in the curriculum of their creative writing class. These teenagers use writing to process their emotions and it reminded me how much I love this practice I often take for granted.

In the midst of a wild couple of years collectively, we are all still processing and perhaps starting to reflect on the year we’re about to end.

Before the hustle and bustle of the holiday season begins, taking stock of where we are and where we’re heading might feel correct…
journaling is my most useful outlet for organizing this.

If that’s also the case for you or you’ve wanted to try journaling, The Write Kit might be useful right now: it is a self-study course about both journaling and writing to share.

It has chapters on: self-awareness / honesty, relational, productivity & organization, creativity, and esoteric journaling (dreams, expectations, the new moon, beliefs, goals). It also has a module on sharing writing, ie. pitching, publishing, rejection, and editing.

Let me know if you have any questions about it. and I mentioned this on the podcast but the code: "november" will continue to make it 50% off for the week.

2 new podcast episodes below + 1 new episode of Spiraling that is the season finale. Thank you for listening, reading, and connecting with me--it means so much.

Talk to you next week.

Love,
Katie

I spoke with Victoria Jane about Human Design, a system of personality mapping that I have found useful. After finding herself burnt out working in Silicon Valley, Victoria discovered her Human Design, which eventually led her to a career in helping others use it. We talk about ease vs. challenge, how Human Design relates to other personality charting systems like Enneagram and astrology, alignment, trusting rest and creation cycles, decision making, and more.

If this is your first time hearing about Human Design, feel free to start by looking up your own chart. Also, if you go back to my archive, there are several episodes with other human design readers I've had on the show that you can look into to learn more about the basics of Human Design and simply hear other perspectives. Or, you can start here.

Prioritizing Connection, Care, and Creativity with Singer-Songwriter Dana Williams 🎄

This week I spoke to singer-songwriter Dana Williams about her career in music, how studying poetry at Sarah Lawrence informed her songwriting, and her new holiday album. Raised on singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, she brings a jazzy nonchalance to her delivery while drawing big emotion from the subtlest vocal movement. Dana's music was featured in the Oscar-winning film Whiplash and she has collaborated with artists like Freddie Gibbs, Boogie, and Rejjie Snow. We covered her habits and routines, navigating grief and change, prioritizing community, what she's been learning lately, how gentleness helps her creatively, what she's wanting to prioritize, how she learns through creative collaboration, and more.
