Research-based Wisdom for Parents Who Want to Raise Successful, Happy Adults

In her viral TED Talk, Dr. Julia Lythocott-Haims tells us how research shows that giving our kids a little independence and a lot of love can go a long way. Here are a few takeaways from her talk and her book.

  • Childhood chores give kids the impulse to roll up their sleeves and pitch in. They become adults who look around and wonder, “How can I help?”
  • Happiness in life comes from love, not of work, but of humans. Childhood needs to teach kids how to love and be loved.
  • If they are to become self-effective (a person's belief in their ability to succeed in a particular situation), our children need to do a whole lot more planning, decision making, trial-and-error, hoping, and coping by themselves.
  • Our job is to support our kids in becoming their glorious selves. Embrace who your child is, not who you want them to be.
  • If your kids are anxious, let them know you love them and are there for them if they want to talk. Trust that they will come to you when they need you.
