NOTES ON A GALAXY FAR, FAR AWAY
NUMBER 11
December 25, 2021

It’s Christmas Day! Which means that it’s December 25—which means that it’s four days until the premiere of The Book of Boba Fett on Disney+. Here’s the latest commercial spot for your viewing pleasure.

For those who don’t remember him, Boba Fett is the bounty hunter in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi who brings Han Solo to Jabba’s palace frozen in carbonite. Boba had four lines of dialogue and six minutes of screen time over the two films, knocked into the maw of the fearsome Sarlacc monster in the opening sequence of Return

Just how Fett survived the Sarlacc’s digestive juice hasn’t yet been revealed, but he played a major role in the second season of The Mandalorian, and now he has his own show.

The Christmas release is appropriate, because Boba made his first appearance not in The Empire Strikes Back, but in an animated sequence halfway through the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special in 1978. Making your way through that whole ill-conceived special is tough even for a diehard fan like me, so I've cued up Boba’s appearance in the video below.

Disney+ has an excellent documentary about the character entitled Under the Helmet: The Legacy of Boba Fett, and this New York Times story will fill you in on the history of this fan-favorite who is now finally getting his due.

Stay tuned for more about Fett in our New Year’s Day issue.

Next Issue: Happy New Year!
