We are so close to the halfway point of the winter season, and you’re doing great. While the southern hemisphere is enjoying the rewards of sunny days, the northern hemisphere is still tucked away waiting for the first signs of spring. We’ve had warmer weather and sun for the last few days here in the PNW, but I’m careful not to get my hopes too high.
On February 1st, we will begin a new lunar year and through the 2nd is the celebration of Imbolc. Myth has it that during Imbolc, the hag/witch/goddess of winter months Cailleach must gather more wood for her fire. If the weather is fair on that day, it means that she can gather what she needs and winter will last longer. But if there is bad weather, she cannot go out for more wood and winter will end sooner.
In the States, this has translated to Groundhog day on February 2, where we entrust Punxsutawney Phil to divine the duration of our snowy season. If you’re familiar with him, you know he’s not usually very good at his job. So this year, I’ll be making sure to honor my hearth and the guardians thereof in hopes that Cailleach goes easy on us.
Either way, we are where we are now. I was reminded this week of a Cosmic Truth, which is that there is no “good” thing or “bad” thing. It is what it is, and we make the decisions we make. We are endowed with free will, which includes the choice to subscribe to the beliefs of the collective ego or be guided by Cosmic Principles. Do we make a decision that serves the ideas of the collective ego, that may create conflict or chaos? Or do we make a decision in alignment with the principles of Cosmic Harmony and therefore be fulfilled? Even conflict and chaos, although they are uncomfortable, are neither good nor bad. They just are. Fulfillment is also neither good nor bad, it just is.
Tomorrow’s Full Moon in Cancer is trine Neptune and opposite Pluto. It offers us the opportunity to reflect on our relationships to our home and our family. It may feel emotionally intense, a trine with Neptune can add a desire for the transcendental, for spiritual meaning to our emotions; and an opposition to Pluto can signify transformations in our relationships. But remember that your perspective is subjective. Allow your desire to nurture create a healthy sense of belonging for you. Embrace your creativity and practice your artistry. Remember that grudges are only misplaced energy, and holding onto them will drain you of your valuable spark.
Six months ago (what feels like years!) was the New Moon in Cancer, and its serendipitous aspect to Uranus had us ready to make changes to our home, our sense of family and how we define belonging. Now at the fullest expression of that moon, we can reflect on how those changes, choices, and plans came to fruition.
FOR THE BODY
Cancer rules the chest, breast, stomach, womb, lymphatic system and the pleural membranes of the thorax.
â—¦
Take some time with your journal and take stock of how your relationship to your home and family have changed over the last six months. What transformations are you seeing? Where are you experiencing a sense of belonging?
What are you nurturing?

Gentle seated twists can help to detox the stomach, spleen, and liver.

When all else fails, have a good cry. Sometimes I listen to music for this, sometimes I rewatch the season finale of Six Feet Under.
Yesterday the sun moved out of Gate 61, where the theme was recognizing the Inner Truth (in situations as well as within ourselves) and into Gate 60, the Gate of Limitation, Acceptance. How befitting that the energy moves from that of understanding to that of acceptance! When we distinguish between false and true limitations, we see that the only true limitations are those set by the Cosmic Principles. Gate 60 is a pressure of restraint necessary for energy to mutate into form; accepting the limitations of the process of mutation in order to achieve the gains of growth. Now that we understand our Inner Truth, and that the truth within situations is complex and only understood over time, we can accept the limitations necessary to foster transformation. Although it may seem halted, there is change beneath the surface.
