Introducing…

Hello, Fresh Coasters.

This new year marks some crazy things. The start of our third season (wow!) and some news we’re very excited to share with you! If you’ve been following along since we became owners in 2020, you already know that the property where Fresh Coast Cabins sits has seen a smattering of different identities over the years.

The property first opened sometime around the late 30s or early 1940s as Lakeside Resort. Since then, it’s served as a private residence, a German bar and restaurant, a space where so many danced, laughed, drank, and celebrated the many joys that are vacationing on Lake Superior in the Keweenaw Peninsula. However, the years had not been kind to this building and we had some different ideas for it when we purchased the resort in May 2020.

Demo to reno
It was in such a state of disrepair that we grabbed the sledge hammer with a plan to demo it (along with the cabins!) and start from the ground up. But then… Covid came along and the building grew on us. With our renewed spirit, we re-envisioned it as Revontulet. By the holiday season we were neck deep in gutting the entire building.

Fast forward to today. Inside Revontulet you’ll find a cozy ground-floor lobby that will be open to all Fresh Coast guests this season, plus a few other fun surprises still in the works. Cozily nested apart from the central milieu are the two new Aurora Suites: Aurora Major upstairs and Aurora Minor downstairs. Aurora Minor is a studio space that will sleep two, ideal for a couple or solo traveler; we’ll tell you more about it as we get closer to its opening in 2023!

Opening this season we have Aurora Major—1,000 sq ft of luxurious, woodsy vibes with a private deck and outdoor gas fireplace overlooking the water. The spacious suite has two king-sized beds, sleeping four. But the pièce de résistance…
a second-story, unobstructed view of Lake Superior from your bedroom. Imagine not having to leave the comfort of your bedroom to gaze out into the Superior abyss or witness the northern lights reflect on the water. Remember when we took on that insane project of removing, replacing, and raising the original 1,500 sq ft roof? It was for this view, and holy smokes was it worth it.

Why revontulet?

Revontulet. [re‧von‧tu‧let] Noun
.

  1. Finnish word translating to “fox fires.”
  2. Home of the new Aurora Suites at Fresh Coast Cabins.

Revontulet is a Finnish word meaning “fox fires.” Revon (“fox's”) +‎ tulet (“fires”). In Finnish folklore, it’s said that the auroras are created by arctic foxes running over the frozen tundra creating sparks that light fires in the sky. Some also say its the reflection from its fiery, radiant fur that produces the captivating natural phenomenon. Along with paying homage to Jason’s Finnish roots, it’s this mystical connection to the northern lights after which the two suites are named that inspired us. We love this video that brings the fox fires to life. Better yet? Watch the northern lights dancing from the Fresh Coast shore to experience what you could see if you stay here.

The Keweenaw is well-known for our dark skies that make viewing the aurora very accessible! When you witness for yourself the lights dancing across the sky, you too will feel the magic of Revontulet. We’ve been working hard for over a year to bring this magical retreat to life. We can’t wait to share this new Lake Superior experience with you.
