The first half of the Cthulhu stories…

Hey First name / friend,

The Cthulhu is Hard to Spell: Battle Royale launch is less than a month away! We're launching on February 22nd. You can sign up to get notified below.

Today, I wanted to share with you imagery from the first half of the stories, starting with my story with Erik Lervold, Battle Royale, where Cthulhu fights Zeus with the fate in the universe in the balance.

Battle Royale (Art: Erik Lervold, Words: Russell Nohelty, Colors: Catherine Hajek)

The biggest criticism I got about the last two volumes was that the cover did not relate to any of the stories inside the anthology. Well, Erik, Cat, and I fixed that this time by doing an epic 3-part, 12-page wrestling story where Cthulhu fights Zeus in a battle for the fate of the universe. This story takes place throughout the anthology and the uniforms are based on wrestlers you might recognize and Erik loved drawing so much. The battle takes place across time and space as they destroy cities and planets to decide the fate of the cosmos.Comics and wrestling go together like peas and carrots, but you've never seen wrestling like this.

Cthulhutown (Art & Words: Christian Gossett Vila, Colors: Paul Tobin, Letters: Ed Dukeshire, Graphic Design: Maryann White)

Christian had a bit of a comics sabbatical between the indie book The Red Star and our last volume, but he's back to complete the series with us with his story Cthulhutown, about a young starlet who gets recruited for a job at a creepy old...well, you know the old Lovecraftian chestnut so I won't spoil it.

It’s Time for the Feud (Art: Emily Riesett, Words: Heather Gibb, Letters: Jerome Gagnon)

The craziest thing about this story is not how good it is, because naturally Heather was going to pull together an awesome story, but that Emily is s teenager (which is why I'm tagging her father)!

Delivery (Art: Kang Jing, Words: Tara Clarkson, Colors: Pavith C)

This is a brand new team to our anthologies, and I can't wait for you to meet them. I was so thrilled with how this story turned out.

Secrets (Art: Michael Mayne, Words: James Maddox, Letters: Justin Birch)

I've known James for a long time and really, really wanted to work with him, so I was thrilled that he submitted to this anthology. I like silly stories that have a spooky point, and this one fits the bill.

Elder Buns (Art: Andrea Rosales, Words: Diane Barker, Letters: Frank Ovetkovic)

I'm working with Andrea on a new project that we're premiering in a few months, but this was the first time I had worked with her on a book. This is another very silly story and I can't wait to share it with you.

The Reckoning (Art and words: Mary Bellamy)

Mary has been in all of our anthologies, and she returns to finish her Cthulhu trilogy in this volume. The story is so cute, and I love the universe she has created.

Orientation Day (Art: Abby Butler, Words: L.K. Ingino, Letters: Joel Rodriguez)

Abby and L.K. return to our series. I always got a very haunted Dr. Seuss vibe from Abby's work, and this one is no different. This is an awesome story and just the right about of cute and spooky, just like college.

A Date with Cthulhu (Art : Leonie O’Moore, Words: Trina Robbins)

I have actually been in an anthology with Trina before, but I have never worked with her. I also met her once at a con in Hawaii and had dinner with her, but I have never worked with her. It was an honor to have her do a story for our anthology. I'm still kind of buzzing about it even now.

A Matter of Significance: (Art and words by: Nathan Lueth)

Nathan is back with a very interesting edition to the anthology where Lovecraft and Tolkien face off in battle with all of their characters to determine the greatest pantheon of them all.
Image item
Orderly Misconduct (Art: Carolyn Carter, Words: Brandie June)

Brandie and Carolyn return with a silly and fun story about a lawyer who helps take down the Lovecraftian gods.

The Music of Erika Sahn (Art: Venisa Del Aguila, Words: Eddy Hedington, Colors: Claire Donaghue)

This is a very bittersweet story for me. Eddy was a good friend of mine and he died tragically during the production of this book. I miss him dearly and this book is dedicated to his honor.

Mind Trap (Art: Donny Hadiwidjaja, Words: Patrick Kellner, Colors: DC Alonzo, Letters: Ed Dukeshire)

Patrick and Donny are new creators to me, but I absolutely loved their story in this anthology. Lovecraft's work are complete mind screw, and this story follows in that tradition.

I Wouldn’t Do That (Art by: Chris Pitcairn, Words: N.S. Kane)

N.S Kane missed out last anthology, but I'm so excited to have her back with this story about why you should always be nice to spiders.

Making Ready (Art: Dan Schkade, Words: Justin Peniston)

I have known Justin forever, and his webcomic was long when I met him years ago. I always admired how he stuck to it for now over 1,000 updates, and it doesn't seem to be stopping any time soon. I'm so excited to have him and his team in this anthology.

George Smith and the Black Goat of the Woods (Art and Words: Cammry Lapka)

You might recognize Cammry as the artist for Black Market Heroine. I love her work, and her vibe. I can't wait for you to see more of her word in this anthology. I adore her and her work. Every time I get to work with her is a joy. This story is silly and adorable in all the best ways.

Yig’s Kids (Art and words by: Kelsi Jo Silva)

There are a couple of artists I geek out over getting to work with, and Kelsi is one of them. I remember asking her in 2019 to be in the second anthology at Denver Comic-Con, and I was so so so thrilled she was able to deliver one of my favorite pieces from the second edition. I love her work so much. Kelsi did the pin-ups for the Obsidian Spindle Saga last June. Every time I get to work with her it is a thrill.

That's it. That's the first twelve stories in Cthulhu is Hard to Spell: Battle Royale. If you enjoyed those, make sure to sign up and get notified when we launch.

TALK SOON

We write for the rebels. Rebels that are obsessed with pop culture and question everything, especially authority. Punks, emo kids, goths, nerds, geeks, outlaws, bandits, and rebels, these are our tribe. People that grew up outside the system until that system realized it was "cool" to be like them, as if we did it because it was cool. Our tribe doesn't move to the back of the bus. They burned their bras and have never seen a protest they didn't like. They stand up for what's right even when it's unpopular. They don't care what anybody else thinks. We demand to be entertained as much as we want to think deeply about real issues that matter. We want our stories to have a message, but we want that message hidden under a thick layer of action and fun. We find humor in the dark places of the world. The darker the better. The more humor the better. We want to shine light in the dark corners and show there's humor there too, in the places we're not supposed to go.
