THE WFH EDIT
Sensory Strategist and
Canadian-in-Paris
DANIELLE BARICH
knows the the art of a sensual space.

Tapping into our senses on a trip to Italy is easy - to see, eat, touch, smell and listen in a new sensory way is inherent to our love of travel.

But without passport in hand it is much easier to subconsciously move through life without much sensory notice, and ongoing work-from-home orders and unscheduled quarantines only add to the monotony of our everyday.
Engaging with our senses is not just for the jet-set.
It is an intrinsically crucial aspect of experiencing and enjoying our home space, ultimately bringing us back into the present.

Recalling these sensory moments is a proven tactic for calming the nervous system and lowering anxiety, and can enliven even the most lacklustre or repetitive home office malaise.
Danielle's top tips for
breathing fresh life
into the (still)
WFH doldrums.

what you are experiencing is a proven tactic for calming your nervous system and lowering anxiety.

FORM + FUNCTION
Clean Your Space
And take a shower. You may not have noticed yet, but the stale aroma of slept-in sheets, the hoody you've worn for five days and the overall stale air in your home needs to go before you can start enjoying a new, refreshing experience.
No need to use detergents with a scent, just give everything an easy clean - even the smallest freshen-up is physiologically cleansing.
01
FRAGRENCE
Cultivate YOUR SCENT STORY
Find a candle or diffuser you love. Scent is a powerful sensory tool, so try a few  and take the time to find one that speaks to you and the essence of your home space. I love reed diffusers for their longevity and constant flow of scent, which are also safer than candles in case you fall asleep or have children and pets around.
02
INVITATION TO FEEL
FABRICS THAT FINESSE
Change out of your sweats and into fabrics that feel wonderful on your skin, like silk, chiffon or wool. A mix of textures in your pillows, bedding, blankets and desk chair adds a sumptuous feeling of luxury. One of my go-to tactile secrets is to invest in linen bedding, practical in terms of temperature regulating, but also such a fabulous feeling on your skin as you fall asleep.

SOUNDSCAPES
MAKE YOUR MOOD
Follow or create playlists for each type of task you must do at home: from prepping dinner melodies, to an upbeat cleaning playlist, a hype-yourself-up soundtrack or even a it's-too-early-I-need-coffee playlist that will ease you into your day.
Have these at the ready in your Spotify so you can seamlessly shift gears.
Music is transformative so let it take you into a new sensory moment.
04
TASTE MAKER
SAVOR FLAVOURS
At least once a week, plan to cook yourself a meal you have only on special occasions. Maybe a dessert you tend to make over the holidays, or a dish you had on vacation in Greece, or even something you used to love as a kid and never eat anymore. A meal to look forward to that will tap into delicious memories like a small escape from home.
05
SPRING FORWARD
Embrace the
Power of FLOWER
Order yourself a bouquet or a wild plant for your WFH desk or bedside table. Something beautiful and bright that you will love looking at each day and give the space a visual boost - no need to await a special someone or holiday upcoming.
