On “tokenizing”

Hello, folks trying to "hire diverse":

The fear of tokenizing (or doing something else wrong on race) leaves too many whites with nearly-all-white workplaces (and social circles - but that's another message).

My friend Neha Sampat (founder of GenLead|BelongLab) recently explained, “When you USE someone's identity to make you LOOK good, you are tokenizing. When you VALUE someone's unique perspectives, experiences, and expertise…you are not tokenizing.”

If you want to hire (or keep hiring) diverse folks, you need to say so. Proudly. Even if you feel weird. (Example below from my favorite online yoga studio, Wild Ember):
If you want to learn what (else) works and what doesn't (on all things corporate diversity, equity, and inclusion), come to the event I'm hosting with Anti-Oppression Business Strategist & Inclusive Leadership Coach, Nadi Fantastic on March 11th (details below).

As always, we're going to be having a suuuuuuuper-honest conversation. Come with your trickiest sticking points - or debates on your team - you will get to ask questions confidentially.
