Well, I'm excited if a little nervous about publishing my first blog/newsletter on the topic of Magic. Putting ideas out in to the ether evokes the imposter syndrome within, yet I remind myself “if it helps just one person then I am putting good back into the World” and that can't be a bad thing. Here goes.
GET STOCKED
MAXIMISE YOUR MAGIC & STAY ORGANISED
FUNDAMENTALLY
I believe one of the core pillars to sharing a quality experience of Magic with an audience is one of variety. A variety of experiences leaves an audience with a wired brain filled to the brim with enchantment, and stories to tell.
I first shared this framework in a lecture for the Cambridge Pentacle club back in February. It's a condensed, shareable, version of the way my brain operates when thinking about my Magic performances, I call it STOCKED, a handy acronym with an appropriate name.
“They did lots of amazing things with cards” isn’t as compelling or shareable as “my card ended up on the other side of the room, they knew my pin number, and my ring ended up inside an Orange!”
AT THE CORE
The STOCKED framework accomplishes two things;
1) Allows me to maximise variety both Magically and Dramatically for the audience.
2) Organises my repertoire.
Keeping performances well STOCKED ensures variety of experience for the audience. It is a tool which can be used help create a new set, act, or show, from existing or new material.(And used as a creative tool it can be used to generate new ideas for presentations. More on this another time).
Each letter represents a lens I view my material through;
S - Scene
T - Type - (ie Fitzkee’s 19)
O - Objects
C - Contexts
K - Keywords
E - Energy
D - Duration
Over the next few months I'll be deep diving in to each of these lenses, how I use them to critique and direct material for maximum impact (and how you can too).
I hope this whets the appetite for now.
A QUESTION
