this months kitchen iq

Many of us know that certain foods are good for us, but more often than not we are unfamiliar with why and how exactly they serve our health and wellbeing.

Below are a few of my favorite kitchen staples that I incorporate regularly a) because I enjoy them and b) because I know how they support my body, mind, emotions and overall quality of health.

I know, in the beginning it can feel a bit daunting, which is why I recommend starting slow. Maybe you know the function of some of these, maybe you don't. Regardless, see if you can incorporate them a bit more intentionally this month. And if you do, don't forget to briefly make the mental connection between what you're eating and what it's doing for your body!

Brazil Nuts - are high in Selenium, a trace mineral required for proper bodily function, especially thyroid health. They're  a great source of calcium and magnesium and provide a decent amount of monounsaturated fats (the healthy ones), which can help reduce cholesterol levels and risk of heart disease. They support brain health, mood and can help boost insulin sensitivity, which is especially good for diabetics. Like most nuts, they are higher in calories and fat, so you really only want or need a few. In fact, if you eat too many, you run the risk of Selenium toxicity so I recommend eating 2x day and treating it like a supplement. This is a great example of more not being “more.” This is the brand I like.

Spirulina - a blue green algae that is the highest plant based source of protein, great for your digestive system, supportive for joints and inflammation, scientifically proven to detox the body of heavy metals and loaded with chlorophyll, which helps alkaline your body. Spurilina also boosts the production of white blood cells and antibodies that fight viruses and bacteria in your body.  Overall, a phenomenal ingredient to incorporate into your diet. I eat it in smoothies 3-4x week and this is the brand I like.
