Rich Life Business Development Tip #3:
Getting clear on what you want +
protecting your energy with boundaries

When I was working 9-5, after a serious episode of burnout in 2014, I promised myself: never again.

Never again would I sacrifice my health for my work. I worked in a notoriously high pressure industry. But, if I am honest, I created the burnout myself…

I would say yes to extra work to be “helpful”. I would always go the extra mile because I wanted to “do my best”. I would work late because I didn’t want to “let people down”. And I certainly wouldn’t tell people I was struggling - I just kept thinking “if I just work this one more weekend, then I’ll finally get ahead and the pressure will ease off.”

And so the downward spiral towards burnout continued! 😵

Can you relate to this pattern at all, First name / love?

The truth is, I was living my life based on other people’s demands. And I had virtually NO boundaries. And what’s why I got so burnt out.

It’s painful to realise that we can be the architect of our own suffering. And it’s also very empowering to know you can change your habits and attitude. And you can change your financial fortunes too.

Working for myself, I was acutely aware of burnout being a common trait for business owners and entrepreneurs. And I knew 100% that I was NOT going to let that happen for me! This hustle and grind culture is an outdated paradigm that still hangs around our society.

I totally get that we can be incredibly passionate about our business. And of course dedication is required. You are responsible for driving your biz forward, so there’s a lot of pressure to “make it work”, right?

I have big dreams for my life and business! As I sure you do too,First name / my friend. Sure, we need to be committed and show up. Yes there can be pressure. But this can be in ways that help you grow and evolve!

So how you can generate the income you desire without burnout? This is what I have! It ain’t no fantasy. And this is what I want for you too. It’s all about being intentional with your activity and focus.

This email has a lot of value and is just a snippet of the content from my Rich Life Blueprint - it’s launching soon, so check out how to join me here.

Financial success without burnout

Financial success without burnout requires 3x ingredients:
  1. A goal - a clear vision for your life with tangible, specific goals and income targets that get you excited/motivated!
  2. Plan - with actions that are aligned to these kick-ass goals
  3. Boundaries - so you can shape and direct your energy to be aligned to the plan and your goals
Before we explore boundaries, we need to know what we are creating boundaries for 😊 This is what I work closely with clients to establish: what’s important to you in life and in business.

If we don’t have clarity on what’s important to us, this is when we end up being reactive to other people’s requests. I see this so often with my clients. They end up getting resentful or feel uninspired by their work. Because they are not in the driving seat of their own business + life! They are living their life based on other people’s demands.

How about you, First name / love? Are you living for your life for you? Or guided mostly by someone else's demands?

Getting clarity on your goals

OK! First step! Follow this process to get clarity on your goals + business activity  - we do all this in the Rich Life Blueprint group coaching programme
Side note: this really is a game-changer - it's tempting to be too busy to do this, which is all the evidence you need that you need to do this!
  • Get clarity on your business income goal - break this down into week, month, quarter.
  • Get clarity on where you are currently spending your time - list everything out in a typical day/week. Which activates are aligned to your goal? And which are not?
  • Get clarity on what is income-driving activity + how much time are you spending on this? Be honest with yourself.
  • Categorise your activity as “on the business” (stuff you need to keep your biz ticking over e.g. finances + creating processes) and “in the business” (doing your actual client-facing work). Are allowing sufficient time for both?
Once you have this type of clarity about your goals and how your energy is being spent, you may spot some gaps or opportunities. Either places you are spending energy that is not aligned to your goals, or quick wins for income growth. Woo!

Start to make changes to your focus NOW. And one change you can also implement are BOUNDARIES!

"It takes discipline to be a free spirit"

This Gabrielle Roth quote speaks the truth. Boundaries are beautiful ways to protect your energy and focus, so you direct it towards what YOU want to do. And this is the path to freedom! Time-freedom, financial-freedom, and freeing yourself of unhelpful patterns.

To identify and execute boundaries, follow these steps:
  • Remind yourself of your goal. This is why it’s important you execute boundaries - this is your incentive (otherwise you’re unlikely to do something uncomfortable).
  • Take whatever action you can your side first to adjust your focus e.g. planning in sufficient time for your work, time-batching your tasks, turning your phone off when working on certain projects etc. Be committed!
  • Communicate externally to anyone that you need to set a boundary with - use non-violent communication processes to practice your needs.
  • Do not apologise for putting in place boundaries, unless you really need to. Try saying “thank you” instead of “sorry” more generally in life - it has a whole different energy to it!
When sharing a new boundary with someone, a voice note or phone call is preferable to an email or text, as this can help your emotion be conveyed and allow them to ask questions. Practice saying it first if you need to, to help it feel smooth.

And that’s it! Stand firm on your boundary once it’s in place and do not go back over it (unless absolutely necessary). You weaken your word and create confusion for yourself and others if you repeatedly go back on boundaries. You may feel scared doing this at first.

Using boundaries used to make me feel slightly sick. As a recovering people pleaser, I was worried about inconveniencing people or offending them. It gets easier over time and with repetition. Respect yourself and others enough to use boundaries.
