April 29, 2022 – Edition 03: F1600 Round 02 Preview

Good morning from a cold Lexington, Ohio! Fresh off of completing my final week of college classes and exams, I'm in town for Round 02 of the F1600 Championship Series at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course this weekend.

There's a strong field of just about 25 F1600 cars here and I'm eager to get going and continue the strong pace that I showed in South Carolina a month ago. For those who aren't familiar, Mid-Ohio is a classic American road course. Put simply, it's a driver's track, providing a fun challenge both on and off the track. On the track, it has its fair share of elevation changes, sweeping corners, and technical bits, and the driver can make the difference. Off the track, Mid-Ohio is infamous for track conditions that can change on a dime, meaning that drivers and engineers must be on the top of their games to keep the car in the right window.

Last year, I enjoyed the challenge of Mid-Ohio, but had a bit of a difficult time due to some mechanical gremlins. While I was the fastest newcomer in final practice, our solid pace was foiled by a mechanical issue in qualifying that kept us from completing the session. This left us starting in the rear of the field in P17, before a solid recovery drive allowed me to finish in P7. Race 2 brought a good result just off the podium in P4, while P10 was the best we could manage in Race 3.

However, as I experienced at Carolina Motorsports Park earlier this year, returning to a track for the second time makes all the difference. I'm excited for the strong pace that I know we'll show this weekend, following the prep that I have put in over the last few weeks. The forecast also seems to be calling for rain early Sunday, adding another dimension to the challenge that is Mid-Ohio. I quite like racing in the wet, and am ready to attack that challenge should it present itself come Sunday.

Today, we'll be on track for two practice sessions. These two 30-minute sessions will serve as crucial track time, both to re-familiarize myself with the circuit and ensure that the setup is to my liking. Qualifying and Race 1 will follow on Saturday, while Sunday will bring Races 2 and 3. Below is the weekend schedule, with all times listed in ET.

With a large, competitive field, iconic track, and possibility of rain, it should be an exciting weekend, to say the least! I hope you can follow along.

Let’s go racing!

As always, thanks for your support. Cheers!
