this months kitchen iq

Many of us know that certain foods are good for us, but more often than not we are unfamiliar with why and how exactly they serve our health and wellbeing.

Below are a few of my favorite kitchen staples that I incorporate regularly a) because I enjoy them and b) because I know how they support my body, mind, emotions and overall quality of health.

I know, in the beginning it can feel a bit daunting, which is why I recommend starting slow. Maybe you know the function of some of these, maybe you don't. Regardless, see if you can incorporate them a bit more intentionally this month. And if you do, don't forget to briefly make the mental connection between what you're eating and what it's doing for your body!

Magnesium - is the 4th most abundant mineral in the body and plays an essential role in over 300 cellular bodily reactions! Specifically, magnesium is required to assist in nerve impulse transmission, muscular activity, temperature regulation, detoxification reactions and in the formation of healthy bones and teeth. Unfortunately - but unsurprisingly, research suggests that around half (48%) of the population consumes less than the recommended amount (about 400 mg per day) from food. If you think you might be deficient and or want to supplement as a detox, muscle relaxer or sleep aid, this is the brand I recommend.

I personally have trouble sleeping and often experience restless leg syndrome so, a magnesium supplement is a non-negotiable part of my nightly ritual. It also helps after big meals, if you know what I mean ;)

If you want to get more magnesium through diet, here's a list of foods to incorporate more of:
  • Nuts and seeds: pumpkin seeds, almonds, cashews, whole flaxseeds
  • Legumes: black beans, edamame, lima beans
  • Fiber-rich whole grains: quinoa, shredded wheat
  • Greens: spinach
Rhodiola (Rhodiola Rosea) - for all my recovering adderall addicts out there, this one is for you. Rhodiola has a long history of medicinal uses in Russia, Scandinavia and other parts of Europe for decreasing fatigue and increasing the body's natural resistance to various stressors. It's been shown to enhance the body's physical and mental work capacity and productivity, while strengthening the nervous system, fighting off depression, enhancing capacity for exercise, enhancing memorization and potentially prolonging life span! Wowwee! This is the brand I like. Because who doesn't want enhanced sleep, mood, physical performance and mental focus? Let's fucking go [naturally]!
