Official News in the Tech ecosystem
  1. A year after raising $1.3 million seed round, Afriex, a money transfer app has secured a $10 million Series A round at a $60 million valuation supported by Sequoia Capital China, Dragonfly Capital, etc. The remittance startup was founded in 2019 by Tope Alabi and John Obirije and has reportedly reached an agreement with Visa to offer Afriex customers credit and debit cards later this year.
  2. The Central Bank of Nigeria has delivered the final approval to operate as a Payment Service Bank to Airtel Africa's subsidiary, SmartCash Payment Service Bank Limited. This license comes with the responsibility of providing a full suite of mobile money services to Nigerians, including acceptance of cash deposits, money transfers, remittances, etc.
  3. On the heel of its $40 million fund for African-focused startups, Venture Platform, a Pan-African VC supporting groundbreaking market-creating innovation opportunities, added 10 new African startups to its portfolio. The startups include Blochq, Traction, Moni Africa, Plumter, Vendy, Union54, Catlog, Shekel. Fluna and Topup Mama.
  4. Techstars, in partnership with ARM Labs, a Lagos-based innovation program has announced the launch of the ARM Labs Lagos Techstars Accelerator Program. In the new accelerator program,12 startups will be selected to receive funding, hands-on mentorship, and access to the Techstars worldwide network
  5. OnePort 365 has landed $5 million in seed funding to facilitate freight management in Africa and support its entry into new markets in Africa.
  6. Eden Life made an entry into Kenya by acquiring Lynk. The new development adds Nairobi to Eden Life's market having operated in Lagos since its inception.  Eden Life was founded in 2019 Nadayar Enegesi, Prosper Otemuyiwa and Silm Momoh.
  7. Crypto News: Central African Republic has adopted bitcoin as a legal tender. This development makes CAR the first African country to accept bitcoin as an official currency and second in the world after El Salvador.
  8. VC firm, Tofino Capital, announced a first close of $5 million of the $10 million funds to invest in early-stage companies in Africa and other markets.
  9. A Nigeria-based edtech startup, 9jacodekids, raised a $350K seed funding round to expand its staff strength and operations across Nigeria.
